This pilot had a striking pose in the reference photo and I achieved a satisfactory likeness of the subject with this painting. I highlighted the warm burnt umber features of his skin tone and surrounded him with a cool turquoise. The oil paint adds to the realism while the portraiture technique created a sense of his mood and emotion.

Portrait Study of a Young Girl
Oil on Wood Panel, 30cm x 40cm

I started on a wood panel base and used Burnt Umber for the darker areas of the face and head. The skin tones go in next and I try to get a likeness of the subject. When I am happy with the main features, then I add a background colour to match the subject and then add the details to the portrait.
The entire process is enjoyable, from a messy sketch to the point when I am satisfied with the final painting.

Portrait Study of a Young Girl

Oil on Wood Panel, 30cm x 40cm

This is my first painting on a wood panel and I found it quite interesting. I primed the surface with gesso and the oil paint went on smoothly. I will definitely be painting on more wood panels in the future.

I liked the angle of the subject’s face in the reference photo and highlighted the areas that I found interesting in the painting. The portrait really gets a boost by contrasting the warm colours of skin tone with cool green hues in the background. In the past, I resisted adding green or blue to the skin tones, but found pockets of cool areas that really enhances the overall painting.

This original is a great piece for collectors.
𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 and 𝐁𝐨𝐥𝐝. This large artwork can elevate any space. 

On entering the room, you are immediately drawn to the brilliant life-like eyes, strong neck muscles and stunning form. 

The painting skilfully combines light, shadow, atmosphere, colour and movement. The subtle highlights on the horse bring the image forward from the dark background. The sandy ground was key in lifting the horse and gave the composition more motion. 

The Oil on Canvas adds vibrancy to the colours and with the strategic attention to details, I achieved an almost photorealistic painting.
