Strait of Union. A Strategic Waterway for the Future of the UAE.
Over the past month, we have been exploring a speculative idea – not as a project, but as a strategic framework – centered on whether infrastructure could redefine how nations secure sovereignty.

The Strait of Union proposes a sovereign inland maritime corridor connecting the Gulf to the Gulf of Oman.

Beyond infrastructure, it is conceived as a national spine – enabling trade resilience, economic diversification, and the creation of new urban systems. In an increasingly complex global landscape, the question is no longer just about growth, but about control, continuity, and long-term positioning.

At ZNERA, we believe design has a role to play at this scale – contributing to conversations that shape not just cities, but the future direction of nations.

A contemporary coffee hub designed as a social anchor within Abu Dhabi’s evolving urban landscape. Defined by soft, layered forms, the building draws from the fluidity of dunes and shorelines, creating shaded terraces and interconnected indoor–outdoor spaces.

The project prioritizes openness and movement – inviting visitors to circulate between levels, gather, and linger. More than a café, it operates as a flexible public destination, where coffee, landscape, and everyday life intersect – subtly shaping how people occupy, move through, and relate to one another.

ELLE Residences on Dubai Islands introduces the first ELLE-branded residential address in the Middle East, developed by ANAX Developments and shaped by the enduring cultural legacy of the ELLE brand.

Positioned along the waterfront, the project translates a distinctly editorial sensibility into architecture – measured in proportion, refined in detail, and oriented toward expansive views of sea and skyline. Through a carefully articulated composition of layered balconies and sculpted frames, we sought to establish a composed yet expressive identity within Dubai’s evolving coastal context. The structural rhythm is expressed as a continuous architectural outline that wraps the building, lending coherence and depth to the façade while accentuating its vertical cadence.

Comprising a curated collection of residences – from one- to three-bedroom apartments and select townhouses – the project prioritises spatial generosity and continuity between interior and exterior. Floor-to-ceiling glazing, generous terraces, and a nuanced material palette introduce a subtle Parisian influence, balancing softness with precision. The interplay of solid and void enhances transparency while maintaining a strong architectural presence along the shoreline, framing daily life through light, openness and fluid movement.

ELLE Residences stands as a considered translation of identity into built form – where design, culture and place converge with quiet confidence.

With completion expected in 2027, ELLE Residences will take its place along the Dubai Islands shoreline, contributing to a refined new coastal horizon.

Airports occupy a unique position in the architectural landscape. For many, they form the first and last physical encounter with a city – shaping perception before any street, building, or public space is experienced.

While historically driven by engineering, logistics, and operational efficiency, aviation architecture is increasingly understood as part of a city’s architectural and cultural expression. Terminals are no longer neutral transit environments, but spatial thresholds that communicate identity through form, material, light, and environmental integration. Their scale and visibility position them among the most influential public buildings constructed today.

This reflects a broader shift in the role of architecture within infrastructure. Airports are no longer conceived solely as systems for movement, but as civic environments that influence perception, orientation, and memory. In this context, architecture becomes inseparable from infrastructure itself – shaping not only how people move, but how places are understood.

As air quality once again dominates headlines in early 2026, persistent smog, seasonal pollution, and cross-border air movement are shaping daily life in major urban centres. In the Gulf, air quality can spike into unhealthy levels, with Dubai recently recorded among the world’s most polluted cities during AQI surges – a reminder that even rapidly developing regions face complex and evolving environmental pressures.

The Smog Tower was conceived in response to these growing urban pressures, asking whether architecture could move beyond minimising harm to actively improving the air we breathe. Envisioned as a large-scale filtration landmark, the project reframed built form as environmental infrastructure rather than passive backdrop – a thought-provoking concept that explored how design might participate in planetary health rather than simply respond to it.
