How to make a basic chain

Steps

1. Make a slip knot
o Make a loop, put the hook through the loop, then pull the working yarn (the long end attached to the ball) to tighten the loop around the hook. Don’t tighten it too much — the loop should move freely on the hook.

2. Yarn over (yo)
o With the working yarn behind the hook, bring it over the hook from back to front (this is “yarn over”).

3. Pull through the loop
o Pull the yarn through the loop on the hook. That creates one chain stitch. The loop that remains on the hook is not counted as a chain.

4. Repeat to make more chains
o Yarn over, pull through the loop — repeat until you have the number of chains your pattern asks for. Each repeat = 1 chain.

5. How to count chains correctly
o If a pattern says “ch 20,” you make 20 chains (do not count the loop on the hook). To count afterwards, start from the chain farthest from the hook (the tail end) and count toward the hook.

6. Finish or undo
o To undo mistakes, pull the tail and the chain will unravel easily. To finish a chain and secure it, cut the yarn, pull the tail through the loop on the hook and pull tight.

How to Hold Crochet Yarn

Part 2

Common Yarn Holding Methods

Wrap Around Index Finger (most common)

1. Let yarn come from the ball over your pinky finger.

2. Bring it over your ring finger & middle finger.

3. Wrap it around your index finger.

👉 Your index finger becomes your yarn guide, lifting yarn for each “yarn over.”
