Some of you have already found us.

Since we posted our Reel featuring three masterpieces from page 31 of the iconic 1993 Wiehler catalogue, we have received several orders for “The Swing”.

And this one certainly gives us plenty to pack.

There is something truly special about this design: the magnificent dress, the romantic garden and all those tiny details hidden among the 44 carefully selected colours.

It is a large and wonderfully detailed counted needlepoint project, with delicate Petit Point sections bringing the faces and finest details to life.

The complete kit includes the fabric, all the yarn, the counted chart and a needle – everything you need to stitch Fragonard’s famous masterpiece yourself.

Le lendemain, je n’avais plus d’enfant !

“The next day, I no longer had a child.”

This is one heartbreaking story behind 3684-4| “Julie – The Artist’s Daughter”, a historic counted needlepoint kit based on an Old Master portrait by Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun.

Born in Paris in 1755, Vigée Le Brun became one of the most successful female portrait artists of the 18th century.
She began painting professionally as a teenager, became the favourite portraitist of Queen Marie Antoinette and was admitted to the French Royal Academy in 1783.

When the French Revolution began, she fled France with her daughter Julie in 1789.
She lived and worked in Italy, Vienna, Saint Petersburg and London, painting royal families and European high society. She returned to Paris in 1802.

Yet her most personal model was always her only daughter.

Vigée Le Brun painted Julie throughout her life: as a little girl, in tender mother-and-daughter portraits and, in 1792, as the young woman shown here.

Julie later became an artist herself. But after she married against her mother’s wishes, mother and daughter became estranged.
When Julie died at only 39, their disagreements no longer mattered. Vigée Le Brun remembered only the child she had loved and painted so many times.

This deeply personal portrait lives on as a museum-inspired Wiehler Gobelin needlepoint design.
