After François Boucher, this counted needlepoint design combines Continental Tent Stitch with Petit Point details.
Finished size: approximately 66 × 54 cm (26 × 21¼ inches).
Colours: 37.
Fabric: original Wiehler Hardanger with woven counting guidelines.
Stitch density: 9 stitches per cm across the fabric, approximately 23 stitches per inch (23 count).
The fabric is not printed. You count the stitches from the paper charts and work the design onto the fabric.
The main Gobelin sections
The main design is shown on two paper chart sheets. Work these sections in Continental Tent Stitch using four individual strands separated from the six-stranded embroidery floss.
Each stitch spans two fabric threads vertically and one horizontally, slanting from bottom left to top right. Work from right to left, following the needle path illustrated in the instructions.
Each symbol on the Gobelin chart represents two stitches worked side by side. Together, these two stitches fill the area represented by one chart square.
The Petit Point sections
Separate detail charts show the faces, hands and legs. Work these sections in Petit Point on the same fabric, using three individual strands of embroidery floss.
Each Petit Point stitch spans one fabric thread vertically and one horizontally, slanting in the same direction as the Gobelin stitches.
Each symbol on a Petit Point chart represents one stitch. These shorter stitches allow the facial features and other small details to be rendered more finely.
Use the main charts for the Gobelin sections and the separate Petit Point charts for the corresponding detailed areas. Both techniques form part of the same finished picture.
