Trying out my new gouache set for the first time today with a pair of Amanita muscaria mushrooms ð ðïļðĻ
I've never had the opportunity to use gouache despite taking art class in school every single year. My underfunded outer western suburban high school probably couldn't afford it tbh.
I've always loved the look of it though and decided to treat myself to a fairly basic beginner set to see if I like working with it. And I do!
It definitely takes some getting used to, but I love the opacity, saturation and consistency. Being able to reactivate it with water means less waste, and it's non-toxic, so it's a more sustainable choice than acrylics or oils.
This sketch isn't 100% but it's not bad for a completely new medium. I could probably do more shading around the spots and I don't love the gills, but it was really fun to try something different and just spend the day learning and experimenting!
Looking forward to bringing more of my photos to life with gouache. And who doesn't love saying "gwaarsh"?? Let's be real.
Have you tried painting with gouache? What do you like/dislike about it?
