At Ambilite Candle Co., we don't often speak about politics. We speak about community, inclusion, and creating products that bring comfort and joy. Today, however, we feel it is important to speak up.

As the founder of Ambilite Candle Co., I am autistic and regularly rely on support services to help me navigate daily life. These supports assist me to maintain my home, continue my university studies, and run this business. Without them, many of the things people see me achieve would simply not be possible.

One of the biggest misconceptions about autism and many other disabilities is that people only see us on our good days.

They see us when we are smiling at markets, attending classes, running businesses, participating in our communities, and achieving our goals. What they often don't see are the challenges behind the scenes: the exhaustion, the overwhelm, the appointments, the executive functioning struggles, the sensory overload, and the support networks that make participation possible.

It is our carers, support workers, families, and closest friends who often see the full reality of living with disability. They witness the difficult days, the setbacks, the moments of burnout, and the support required to maintain independence and wellbeing.

This is why the current public conversation surrounding the NDIS is so concerning.

Too often, people with disability are being portrayed as a cost to be managed rather than members of our communities who deserve dignity, respect, and access to the supports that allow us to participate in society. When disability supports are reduced, restricted, or treated as an unnecessary expense, the impacts are felt not only by participants but also by families, carers, and entire communities.

People with disability are not the problem. Needing support is not a failure. Accessing services that allow us to study, work, volunteer, create businesses, and contribute to our communities should never be something we are made to feel guilty about, and we will continue to fight and advocate to make sure all people, regardless of ability or disability live the life they deserve.

Well. This is it. The last day of Autism Awareness Month and I have some thoughts.

On the 4th of April, Netflix dropped season 4 of Love On The Spectrum (USA) and what had initially started out as an AUSTRALIAN documentary program that showed what life is like living on the Autism Spectrum and the impact it has on the family, friends and love life's of people living on the spectrum has become sensationalised and edited to only show the instagram perfect version of Autism. We meet the cast of each season and their family conditions and relationships where every single family is highly positive to the point of almost toxic positivity, and also, every single family comes from a middle class income, or, at the the families who become popular on the show are.

This is not the experience of 99% of people living life on the spectrum. The majority of us do not suddenly strike it rich by miraculously being selected for a Netflix filtration showing only the good things in life and then find ourselves able to live off brand deals. Most of us struggle, and that struggle is real. 46% of autistic adults in Australia live at or below the poverty line, 32% of families with ASD children are living in financial hardship, 72% of people diagnosed are at risk of being marked unemployable with the majority of us needing to create jobs for ourselves just to pay the rent and bills.

Follow this up with the recent consistent scapegoating that is placed on Autistic people by the Australian Federal Government where we are accused of the misuse of NDIS funds with now 160,000 people at risk of being removed from the NDIS for having a diagnosis of Autism. Without support from funded carers, most people who live semi independently on the spectrum would end up living either back with their families or in homes or in most likely and most honestly, would end up living on the streets because we would not be able to recieve the support required for every day life.

We are expected to take these hits constantly with no complaint and to accept being a burden on society. When we ask for more support just to find work or for adjustments to be made to assist us to take part in society, we are told that we are being unreasonable and that no one else needs adjustments made to help them out.

We have a long way to go before people on the spectrum have a life that is the same quality as those who do not live with disabilities. This is why we need to keep advocating for people who live on the spectrum and why shows like Love On The Spectrum are so damaging to our everyday lives.

Ambilite Candle Co. was formed with the intention of growing and being able to employ and support other people who live with ASD to have live and to experience employment, but also to bring some light and peace into the lives of neurodivergent people and we need support to achieve this.

So from an ASD founder who genuinely knows what life is really like on the spectrum, happy Autism Awareness month and please remember that what is shown on Netflix isn't real and there is more struggle than there is perfection.
