Australia, we need to have a serious conversation.

Last night, the Australian Parliament passed legislation making significant changes to the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

For some people, this might feel like another piece of legislation.

For people like me, it is deeply personal.

The NDIS has changed my life.

It has given me access to supports that have helped me function, participate, learn, work towards my goals and, perhaps most importantly, believe that I could build a life around the things I AM capable of doing.

And there is a story behind Ambilite Candle Co. that I will never stop telling.

One of my support workers helped me start making candles.

At the time, nobody knew where it would lead.

It wasn't about starting a business.

It was about finding something I enjoyed. Something I could focus on. Something I could create with my hands. Something that gave me confidence.

Those first candles eventually became Ambilite Candle Co.

And Ambilite has grown into something I am incredibly proud of.

The NDIS didn't build my business for me.

It helped give me the support and opportunity to discover that I could build it myself.

That distinction matters.

The NDIS is not simply about funding services. At its best, it is about giving people the opportunity to participate in their communities, pursue education and employment, develop independence and build meaningful lives.

And I want to take that opportunity further.

My goal is to continue growing Ambilite to the point where I can create genuine employment opportunities for other neurodivergent people.

I want to build a workplace where being autistic, having ADHD, or being otherwise neurodivergent isn't treated as something that makes someone less capable.

A workplace where accommodations aren't an inconvenience.

Where different ways of thinking are valued.

Where someone saying "I need support" doesn't automatically become "I can't do this."

Because I know what can happen when someone gets the right support.

I am living proof of it.

I believe the NDIS can and should be improved. There should be accountability. There should be safeguards against misuse. Funding should be sustainable and services should deliver genuine outcomes.

But reform should never lose sight of the people the system exists to support.

People with disability are not numbers on a spreadsheet.

We are students.
We are workers.
We are business owners.
We are artists.
We are parents.
We are partners.
We are creators.
We are employers.
We are members of our communities.

And sometimes, we are able to become those things because somebody gave us the support we needed to get there.

So I am going to keep advocating.

I'm going to keep talking about disability inclusion.

I'm going to keep building Ambilite.

And I'm going to keep working towards a future where this little candle business can employ other neurodivergent people and give someone else the opportunity that my support worker once gave me:

A chance to discover what they're capable of.

Because support should not make people's lives smaller. It should make them possible. 🖤🕯️

Today is our 3rd wedding anniversary. My husband Josh is not only the one who helps me run Ambilite, but he is also the one who steps in when life is hard, drives to markets, makes emergency candles when needed and fixes the website constantly. Without him, I dont know what I would do. I love you Joshua Brooks thankyou for being you.

This is Josh. Not only is he my husband but he is the man behind the scenes. Keeping me on track when I am running behind, driving to and from markets, sometimes hours away, being a voice of reason when I am stressed, making candles if I am away or unable to, doing the post office runs and especially fixing the website when I break it (more often than I admit). Most recently he has been making a digital program to make back end management easier for me.

Today is his 37th birthday. If you know us, you know, especially in the last few years that this is no short of a miracle. Lets all show him the love he deserves.

Happy birthday Josh, you are my rock and I am so greatful that it is you I get to enjoy this adventure with. I love you 💕💕💕

✨ A small update from Ambilite Candle Co ✨

A year ago, we sourced a large batch of 850 jars for our collection... and we’re so proud to say we’ve now completely sold through them.

We’ve also recently discovered we’ve reached 92 five-star reviews and 100% customer satisfaction, which means the world to us and reflects the care behind every candle we make!

As we transition to our next supplier, you may notice slight variations in jar size and colour at upcoming markets, including black, white, frosted, and a small selection of other vessels we currently have in stock in order to not only reduce vessel wastage in our home and collection, but to also create more variety and ease in distinguishing our candle ranges in the future.

This is a natural part of evolving as a small-batch handmade brand, and every candle continues to be crafted with the same intention, quality, and care.

Thank you for growing with us 🤍

At Ambilite Candle Co., we don't often speak about politics. We speak about community, inclusion, and creating products that bring comfort and joy. Today, however, we feel it is important to speak up.

As the founder of Ambilite Candle Co., I am autistic and regularly rely on support services to help me navigate daily life. These supports assist me to maintain my home, continue my university studies, and run this business. Without them, many of the things people see me achieve would simply not be possible.

One of the biggest misconceptions about autism and many other disabilities is that people only see us on our good days.

They see us when we are smiling at markets, attending classes, running businesses, participating in our communities, and achieving our goals. What they often don't see are the challenges behind the scenes: the exhaustion, the overwhelm, the appointments, the executive functioning struggles, the sensory overload, and the support networks that make participation possible.

It is our carers, support workers, families, and closest friends who often see the full reality of living with disability. They witness the difficult days, the setbacks, the moments of burnout, and the support required to maintain independence and wellbeing.

This is why the current public conversation surrounding the NDIS is so concerning.

Too often, people with disability are being portrayed as a cost to be managed rather than members of our communities who deserve dignity, respect, and access to the supports that allow us to participate in society. When disability supports are reduced, restricted, or treated as an unnecessary expense, the impacts are felt not only by participants but also by families, carers, and entire communities.

People with disability are not the problem. Needing support is not a failure. Accessing services that allow us to study, work, volunteer, create businesses, and contribute to our communities should never be something we are made to feel guilty about, and we will continue to fight and advocate to make sure all people, regardless of ability or disability live the life they deserve.
