I’ve once again taken over the family dining table, playing with underglaze colour combinations and painting the floral details on my porcelain pieces. The beautiful Mother’s Day flowers I received this weekend kept me company in the late evenings long after everyone else had gone to bed.

I’m looking forward to seeing how these pieces turn out and will keep you posted!

It’s a long weekend here in Queensland and in between social catch ups and house projects I’m set up at the dining table painting away. Looking forward to getting a kiln full of cups, plates and bowls fired and uploaded onto my website.

The next round of wheel throwing classes start Thursday May 14 and run for 5 weeks at .gallery

I try to plan my classes for both beginners and intermediate students. Beginners get a chance to learn about the fundamentals of clay and wheel throwing. We learn how to centre, pull and shape. I teach them about having intentionality in your pieces and how to fulfil that intention from start to finish.

Intermediate students with more experience are encouraged to bring their challenges and problems to class for us to resolve together. We work on more complex pieces that are personalised for each student based on what they’d really like to learn.

Above all, it’s a welcoming, fun learning environment and I’d love you to join us!

Early morning sessions in my studio make me happy!

You can get some idea from this picture, but every horizontal surface in my studio right now is covered in either freshly thrown pots, ready to trim pots, ready to carve and inlay pots, or pots waiting for their final inspection before being loaded into the kiln.

I’m grateful for my job, but I do miss being a full time potter.

A sampling of small side plates and saucers, with botanical illustrations freshly carved and waiting to be inlayed.

This batch of porcelain pieces will feature tibouchinas, jacarandas, bougainvilleas, kangaroo paw, callistemon and other floral plants that I see on my walks around Brisbane.

After inlaying, painting with underglazes and two rounds of firing, I’m hoping these pieces will be available by the end of April. I’ll be announcing the shop update on my socials and in a short email to subscribers if you’re interested.

Porcelain Bows

are presenting a monthly technical challenge this year and the brief for March was to demonstrate the fabric like qualities of porcelain. My favourite medium.

I usually throw functional pieces so making these sweet little bows was a welcome change for me. I rolled very thin slabs of porcelain and ‘folded’ them into these bow shapes (not easy! Had to massage lots of little cracks out!) I then rolled very slender coils to wrap around the middle.

I do love the way porcelain captures movement and fluidity like this. I also really enjoyed feeling the clay and working it in my hands rather than slip casting (which was my original plan).

Looking forward to April’s technical challenge!

Works in progress on this beautiful Sunday afternoon.

Floral inlay on some porcelain cups. And one that is headed to the recycled porcelain bucket.
