💍 Marriage Witnesses Matter

When researching your family history, it's easy to focus on the bride and groom.
But don't overlook the witnesses.

Those two names, often written quietly at the bottom of a marriage certificate, can provide valuable clues that help unravel family connections.

Marriage witnesses may have been:
• Brothers or sisters.
• Parents.
• Aunts and uncles.
• Cousins.
• Close friends.
• Neighbours.
• Employers.
• Fellow parishioners.

Sometimes they simply witnessed the marriage because they happened to be nearby. However, in many cases, especially in smaller communities, they were people who played an important role in the couple's lives.

If you've reached a dead end in your research, ask yourself:
• Do I know who the witnesses were?
• Do their surnames appear elsewhere in the family?
• Could they help identify parents or siblings?
• Were they living nearby?
• Did they witness other family marriages?

Researching a witness can sometimes reveal relationships that aren't obvious from the marriage certificate alone.

The next time you find a marriage record, don't stop after reading the names of the bride and groom.

Take a closer look at the witnesses.

They may be holding the next clue in your family's story.

Workshop Wednesday 🚗 When Travel Looked a Little Different

There was something wonderfully different doing road trips in Australia before smartphones, Google Maps and social media.

You packed the car, unfolded an actual paper map, stopped at roadside attractions simply because there was a sign telling you something interesting was ahead, and took photographs without knowing whether they had turned out until the film was dropped off and developed weeks later.

And Australia certainly knew how to make a roadside attraction. The Big Pineapple, the Big Banana, the Big Prawn, the Big Merino. Somehow, making something enormous was reason enough to pull over and take a photo. 😂

Some of my own travel memories have that same nostalgic feel. Big cities, small towns and long stretches of road disappearing into the distance. Driving along the beach getting to Double Island. Wave Rock in Western Australia. And, of course, the great Australian tradition of stopping to photograph something ridiculously oversized.

Looking back through old travel photographs isn't only about remembering where we went. They capture how we travelled, what caught our attention, what Australia looked like at the time, and all those little things we didn't realise would one day become nostalgic.

That was the feeling behind my retro Australian travel designs. Not simply recreating destinations, but capturing a little of the fun, freedom and character of travelling around Australia in another era.

Funny how an old photograph can make you remember things you'd completely forgotten. 💛

A Love That Crossed Oceans 💚🍀

Michael and Catherine Kennedy left Ireland behind and made a new life together in rural Australia.

By the time this photograph was taken, they had shared decades of marriage, raised a family and built a life far from the place they had once called home.

We often remember our ancestors through names, dates and places, but photographs like this remind us that behind every family tree were real people, with relationships, hardships, hopes and stories of their own.

Michael and Catherine's was a love that crossed oceans and lasted a lifetime.

🪦 The Burial That Was Almost Lost - Sarah Holley nee Stonestreet / Sullivan

Not all family history mysteries begin 150 years ago. Sometimes they begin with one incorrect piece of information copied online.

One of my research tasks involved locating the burial place of an ancestor, my 3rd Great Grandmother, Sarah Holley. After a life marked by some very difficult circumstances, Sarah was buried without a headstone. Finding the place where she was finally laid to rest, more than a century later, meant more to me than simply locating another family record.

An Australian volunteer cemetery website listed a different cemetery to the one recorded on her death certificate. Rather than accepting either source as correct, I treated them both as evidence to be investigated.

That meant working through the death certificate, finding the cemetery registers and contacting both the regional councils only to be told no record of burial exists. So what then? Fortunately, I had the help of a wonderful "Mudgee volunteer" who track down the actual burial register held by the local history society, and that record provided the strongest evidence.

Family history research isn't about deciding which source you prefer. It's about weighing the evidence and following it wherever it leads. Eventually the evidence pointed back to the original burial cemetery given on the death certificate.

The lesson?

Always follow the evidence, even when it challenges what everyone else believes.

📜 Every source has value. Every source can contain mistakes. Good genealogy comes from evaluating the evidence, not assuming any single source is infallible.
