Workshop Wednesday 📷 Photo Restoration

There can be a surprising amount of detail hiding in an old family photograph.

This photograph had fading, glare, surface damage and lost detail, but careful restoration helped bring much of it back while keeping the character of the original.

For me, photo restoration isn't about making an old photograph look new. It's about preserving what is already there and helping those details be seen again.

Art Calendar (2027) from Kin & Keepsakes 🇦🇺
From $29.95 plus postage

Created to celebrate Australian people, wildlife and landscapes, our 2027 Art Calendar Collection features four uniquely Australian designs.

🌿Spirit of Australian Women
Celebrate the beauty, strength and spirit of Australian women and the remarkable landscapes they represent, from the desert and coral coast to the alpine mountains and rural heartland. Perhaps one of our women will remind you a little of yourself, or of a woman you know and love.

🏖️Australian Beach Escapes
From our beautiful sun-drenched beaches to windswept headlands, rediscover the Australian coast through the nostalgic style of classic Australian travel posters from the 1980s and 1990s. Discover Queensland’s Rainbow Beach and Teewah, through to Twilight Cove and Cottesloe Beach in Western Australia.

🚙Australian Iconic Destinations, Retro Travel
Take a journey back to the golden era of Australian road trips, visiting some of our most iconic destinations through the nostalgic lens of 1970s and 1980s retro travel art. Remember Grundys on the Gold Coast, Sydney’s Luna Park and the Big Banana at Coffs Harbour.

🦘Australian Fauna & Flora
Celebrate the gentle spirit of Australia’s native wildlife and the breathtaking landscapes they call home, featuring much-loved icons including the kangaroo, koala, Rottnest Island quokka, Charleville bilby and little Tasmanian devil.

Four calendars. Four ways to celebrate Australia throughout 2027. 🇦🇺

🏠 The House Your Family Lived In

Have you ever stood outside the home where your ancestors once lived? 🏡

One of the most rewarding moments in family history research is discovering where your ancestors once called home... and realising the building is still standing.

This photograph was taken in Stockholm, Sweden, outside the home where my third great-grandfather, Johan Fredrik Nilsson Segerström, lived in 1870 with his wife and children.

If you're researching your own family, there are many ways to trace where your ancestors lived:

📍 Electoral rolls and census records.

🗺️ Historical maps and land records.

📰 Newspapers and rate books.

📸 Old photographs.

🌏 Modern mapping tools, such as Google Street View.

You never know... your ancestors' home might still be standing today.

💬 Have you ever visited a place where your ancestors lived? Share your story or a photo in the comments. We'd love to see it!

I’ve been following Carl Larsson-gården in Sweden and loved seeing this exhibition celebrating Carl and Karin Larsson, their art, family and remarkable home at Lilla Hyttnäs. Their story is such a beautiful example of how family, creativity and the places we call home become part of the heritage we leave behind.💙

Workshop Wednesday 🖥️

Sometimes a design takes a few different directions before I find the one that feels right.

Working with different ideas for Jellingroo, part of my Whiticker family history, experimenting with the layout, illustration and details in Photoshop.

A little glimpse behind the scenes at how a family story starts becoming a keepsake.
