These images are of me working on the Pod of Belonging public art project that myself and Henry Shawcross have been commissioned to make for@craftdesigncanberrafestival 2026. This is a large piece that will be all crocheted, knitted and made using basketry techniques.

This section is made from plastic garden plumbing pipes and upcycled fabrics and plastics.

conceptually the piece is about the displacement of (disabled) trans people across the world and the desire and need to find somewhere safe to just be. Myself and Henry are both disabled and trans and we are drawing on our own identities as the idea behind the project.

The Pod of Belonging - work in progress. This is essentially a large basket. It's a couple of meters in diameter. The black hose bits or warp parts are gardening water system pipes, some are upcycled/left over bits I got donated, some are old garden hoses and some bits are new. The weft or the bits woven around the bottom is donated garden shade cloth.

This is being made for the It is a collaborative work with Henry Shawcross and will be on exhibition during November as part of the festival, in front of the Canberra Theatre. The Festival has an overall theme of DISSENT. Our work is about displacement of trans people across the world and the need to find comfort or a safe place within that.

Hi Fronds,
So I have been sitting on 'this' for months. My friend Henry Shawcross and I have been commissioned to do a fairly large public artwork, for the Canberra Craft and Design Festival.

This project is very much about our identities as q***r, disabled, trans people.

Here is our artist brief/statement. The image is a drawing of what we are working towards. YOu can follow my insta, I've been saving working photos and videos which I can now post, as the Festival has been launched. We really hope that we do our communities proud. (this will be on exhibition in November in front of the Canberra Theatre).

In our art practices, we have both been drawn to the potential of textiles for artistic expression of our identities as q***r, trans and disabled people. We are aware of the challenges faced by these communities and the resilience and care community members show for each other. Our concept will express this care in a physical form by creating a pod from discarded textiles. These textiles offer the viewer a connection with identity and memory, through tactile sensation of familiar textures, remembering fabric patterns from past domestic surroundings, and displaying colours of identity such as pride flags. The pod will be a large cone shape with an opening on the small end, and the large end will be anchored to the ground with tent pegs.
We will draw on traditional techniques for upcycling textiles such as braided rug making and t-shirt yarn crochet to construct our pod. These techniques create fabrics with different structural and textural properties, increasing its visual appeal and broadening the potential of our pod to be not only a sculptural object, but a space of adaptable comfort. The form of our pod would further heighten its adaptability through the use of braided rope and alternating modules of tight and loose crochet. This enables the pod user to adjust the pod’s closeness to their body and to alter what they and others can see, once inside the pod. This diversity of texture and appearance reflects the diversity of our q***r and disabled communities and their needs.

The idea is to make something every day for three weeks in July to grow community well being and connectedness.

The overall theme for the challenge is

I am using the format of burlesque pasties. Burlesque has a rich history as an artform and has challenged laws and rules throughout. It is still seen as an alternative art form and often led by POC, s3x workers and qu33r folk....outsiders challenging the mainstream.

Todays word prompt is

Glitch

Most non disabled people do not think about inclusion and accessibility. Yet disabled people make up around one fifth of the population.

All it takes is one small glitch to become disabled. A car accident, a fall.....catching a virus.

Todays pasties feature the word disabled in braille.
