How to care for your strawberry plants -

From purchasing your pot
- Whilst tempting to let the pots goto flower and fruit,
trim the first flush of flower spikes to promote more plant growth and larger leaves (approx. 5cm+) to support more and larger fruit.
- We suggest potting up to next size container up (2L) or planting into your prepared garden

Soil Preparation
-Strawberries prefer a slightly acidic soil (Australian soil naturally acidic) that is free draining
-prepare your garden or raised bed with balanced fertiliser (vege mix) or combination of manures and blood and bone and compost
- Strawberries can be planted anytime however best time in Brisbane is before/around Easter so the plants can grow and start fruiting into Autumn and Winter.

Mulching
-Straw is the traditional mulch, Sugar cane is a great alternative that we use when planting and during fruiting to ensure fruit is raised off garden bed.
-Mulch keeps soil moisture in the ground and also insulates soil temperature from extreme cool or heat of day especially in summer.
-Mulch well around the plant to avoid competition from weeds. W**d regularly any competition severing stunts growth and fruit production.

Planting
-Strawberries prefer full sun , 30-45cm apart for best results
-Ensure the soil and planting hole watered before and after planting for best results.
-Best time for planting in the cool of the afternoon after sun is off the garden bed.

Fertilising
-Strawberries need good nutrients to produce continuous fruit
-Complete balanced fertilisers good sources. Osmocote Total all purpose with trace elements works well - (what you put in is what you get out)
-Strawberries appreciate liquid feed seaweed/seasol/thrive especially when growing and before fruit starts to ripen. Add correct amounts there is a risk of burning strawberry plants.

Fruiting
-For best fruit, prune the fruit spikes until leaves get to approx. 5cm wide.
-Strawberries need plenty of water for good fruit production, don’t over water otherwise ripening fruit will loose flavour.

Runners
-Plants will send out runners in summer (after fruiting). Leave in ground to make a strawberry patch.
-Or once new plant established before Easter remove from soil to start a new patch or pot up.
