I’ve Been Medical Frontline for Nearly 20 Years… Here’s What People Wish They’d Taken Care Of Sooner.
After almost two decades as a frontline paramedic, I've seen people at their absolute worst. One thing I hear over and over again is:
"I wish I had looked after myself sooner."
Here are some of the most common health issues I see—and many are influenced by lifestyle choices made years earlier.
🫀 High Blood Pressure
Often called the silent killer. Many people have no symptoms until they experience a heart attack or stroke.
Could be reduced by: Maintaining a healthy weight, regular exercise, reducing excess salt and alcohol, managing stress, and having routine health checks.
🩸 Type 2 Diabetes
I've attended countless emergencies related to uncontrolled diabetes.
Could be reduced by: A balanced diet, regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy body weight, and early screening for those at risk.
❤️ Heart Disease
Many people assume they're too young until they suddenly aren't.
Could be reduced by: Not smoking, controlling cholesterol and blood pressure, exercising regularly, and eating a heart-healthy diet.
🧠 Stroke
A life-changing event that can happen in seconds.
Risk may be lowered by: Managing blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, avoiding smoking, staying active, and recognising early warning signs.
⚖️ Obesity
Excess weight increases the risk of dozens of chronic diseases.
Could be reduced by: Consistent healthy eating habits, strength training, daily movement, quality sleep, and sustainable lifestyle changes rather than quick fixes.
🦴 Loss of Muscle & Frailty
Many people don't realise how important muscle is until they lose it.
Could be reduced by: Resistance training, adequate protein intake, and staying physically active throughout life.
😴 Burnout & Chronic Stress
Some of the sickest people I've met looked "fine" on the outside.
Could be reduced by: Prioritising sleep, setting boundaries, asking for help, taking breaks, and looking after mental health before crisis point.
🍷 Alcohol-Related Illness
Regular excessive alcohol consumption contributes to liver disease, cancers, heart disease, and trauma.
Could be reduced by: Drinking within recommended guidelines or choosing to reduce or avoid alcohol altogether.
🚬 Smoking-Related Disease
COPD, lung cancer, heart disease, and vascular disease continue to devastate lives.
Could be reduced by: Quitting smoking at any age—the health benefits begin almost immediately.
🩺 Ignoring Symptoms
One of the saddest things I hear is, "I thought it would go away."
Early diagnosis often leads to better outcomes.
Take action: See your GP, have regular blood tests, and don't ignore persistent symptoms.
💙 Prevention will never be as exciting as emergency medicine—but it's infinitely more powerful.
Your future self won't thank you for working longer hours or skipping another workout.
They'll thank you for:
✔️ Moving your body
✔️ Eating nourishing food
✔️ Building muscle
✔️ Managing stress
✔️ Getting regular health checks
✔️ Investing in your long-term health
After nearly 20 years on the frontline, I can tell you this with confidence:
The best emergency is the one that never happens.
