BIOGRAPHY

Living and breathing by her self-created ethos, Emma Elizabeth Coffey is turning heads with her interior designing and styling prowess. Born in Sydney, Emma Elizabeth spent the majority of her youth in the USA and UK, relocating to Brisbane as a young teen. Emma Elizabeth knew that in order to get ahead in style and design she would have to stand up while everyone else was sitting down

- and hence relocated to Milan and completed a degree in Commercial Interior Design (Scenografia) from the acclaimed Istituto Europeo di Design (IED). It is the montage of art, design, fashion and innovation that appeals most to Emma Elizabeth. This potent fusion is what inspires her lifestyle interior design and creations. Drawing from years of travel and study abroad, Emma's work is heavily European influenced, yet her artistic cultural reach extends as far as the likes of her favourite artist, Tokyo based Yayoi Kusama. Uncomplicated yet uncompromising in form, Emma Elizabeth Designs featured at Zona Tortona during Milan Design Week 2006. Emma Elizabeth Designs were on show alongside the likes of Swarovski, Tom Dixon, Casa Armani and many other leading international names. However, the defining moment in Emma's trajectory, thus far, was when the Philippe Starck Network requested to view her work --The penultimate validation of her design and styling prowess-- an overwhelming accolade. Emma Elizabeth is now based in Sydney as a freelance commercial stylist & designer, transitioning between, interior design (residentail & commercial), art direction, set design, styling, installation, exhibitions, product design.....and loves every minute of her creative cross disciplinary approach.

Long Lost Leather Love Letters, & yes Judith it is quite the tongue twister ha ha ….
Created in collaboration with designer Alex Fitzpatrick who worked his light magic into my moment, each piece is formed from repurposed hide, material once discarded & now given a second life. Softly lit from within, the works sit somewhere between object and emotion. As though preserving the final glow of a love letter left unopened, forgotten in a drawer, or held onto long after its meaning has shifted.
I love a bit of nostalgia and narrative!

🙏 for trusting me with your excess leather hides.

Many thanks to all the designers involved in the show & all the other shows around the city, a stella line up this year!

On show currently exhibition on until Sunday & all pieces available for purchase.

——— APRIL 2016 ———
When your phone starts reminding you it’s Milan Design Week time, I look back & go holly m***a how did I & WE pull it off with the first group show in 2016.

Ten years on & I still come back to this moment.

A raw idea, a bold leap and a group of designers who believed in something bigger than themselves, and I put together a series of designer markets to turn profit from our Kensington St studio. We turned the float into a kitty to make then Milan semi feasible for all.

We didn’t have a blueprint. Just instinct, energy and a desire to place Australian design on a global stage, first group through the door when we opened was Vogue Italia and Rai Uno, was a pinch me moment.

Unapologetically it was some part creative chiaos, some part ambitious and yet always selfless and full of heart. The kind of project that could have gone either way… but didn’t.

It became a beginning.

Looking back now, it wasn’t just an exhibition, it was a shift. A stylistic signal in some way shape of form. A moment where emerging voices stepped into an international conversation and held their own.

So much has evolved since then but the essence remains the same for me: backing ideas, championing designers and creating space for what’s next. ( Melbourne Design Week May 26’)

Grateful for everyone who was part of that first chapter and I have no idea how close to 15 of us slept in a two bedroom apartment with one shower, but we made it work. The behind the scenes is what I remember most, those going to Milan this year you better come home with some good stories!

In bocca al lupo ragazzi!!
