There’s some people you meet in life that instantly feel like family, and Sharon Napanangka Butcher is one of those people.

Sharon is an incredible artist, mother, grandmother and one of the best storytellers you could ever sit beside. Every trip with Sharon somehow turns into hours of stories, laughter and learning. She’s taught me so much about culture, Papunya, family, country and the stories and protocols passed down to her by her parents and aunties.

Sharon paints her Bush Banana Dreaming, a story taught to her by her auntie. Her auntie’s painting hangs proudly at Alice Springs Airport and every single time I fly through, I send Sharon a photo of it. Straight away she’ll start telling the story again, how the painting came to be there, who painted it and all the memories attached to it.

Storytelling and music run deep in Sharon’s family. Her brothers, including Sammy Butcher from the Warumpi Band, helped shape Indigenous music in Australia and brought stories from country to people all over the world.

One of my favourite memories was travelling with Sharon to the Gold Coast for an exhibition. We were walking past a gallery when suddenly there was Sharon’s painting, hanging right at the front window. Sharon stood there so proudly beside her work, telling me the story behind the painting and the time in her life when she painted it. We ended up going inside, introducing ourselves to the gallery owner and having the biggest yarn.

Over the years Sharon has become family to me. She is nurturing, funny, strong and carries so much knowledge. Spending time with Sharon is something really special and it’s an honour to share her stories and paintings with the world.

You can view Sharon’s entire collection on our website ❤️ Link in bio 🫶🏽

A quiet moment on Country, painted by Warlpiri artist Sharon Napanangka Butcher.

This work tells the story of women collecting bush tucker, a practice passed through generations, carrying knowledge, survival, family and connection to land.

Every detail is painted by hand, with layers of movement and symbolism that reveal themselves the longer you sit with the piece.

Styled here in a modern home to show how powerful original Aboriginal art can feel within a space, grounding, warm and deeply alive.

This is an original, one-of-one artwork. Once sold, it will never be reproduced ❤️

Some people paint stories. Maria Nampijinpa Brown lives them first.

Born and raised in the remote desert community of Yuendemu, Maria’s life has always been deeply connected to family, Country, culture and community. Her paintings are an extension of that life, rich with movement, memory and generations of storytelling passed down through her family line.

Maria met her partner, Angus, in Yuendemu many years ago. Together, they built a life grounded in love, resilience and culture. Angus has become not only her life partner, but also her trusted studio hand, preparing paints, helping prepare works and supporting Maria as she travels across Australia attending sorry business and reconnecting with family spread across the country. Life for Maria is never still. One week she may be in Darwin, the next travelling deep into community, surrounded by cousins, grandchildren, aunties and old friends. Family always comes first.

Maria comes from an extraordinary artistic lineage. Her grandfather was the renowned Paddy Sims and her grandmother Bessie Sims, both respected figures whose stories and strength continue to influence the generations that follow. Today, Maria’s own daughters are becoming incredible artists in their own right, carrying forward the knowledge, stories and artistic traditions that have flowed through the family for decades.

To sit with Maria is to immediately feel warmth. She is funny, sharp, endlessly knowledgeable and deeply caring. A true matriarch. The kind of woman who remembers everyone, checks in on family constantly and somehow still finds time to paint extraordinary works between travelling, cooking, caring for grandchildren and attending community obligations.

Her paintings carry all of it, the movement of desert roads, the laughter of family gatherings, the grief of sorry business, the beauty of Country and the strength of generations of women before her.

Every artwork by Maria Nampijinpa Brown is more than a painting. It is a living story of family, culture, survival and connection.

Missing Maria so much this past week. ❤️

Maria and Angus are currently rugged up in a very cold Yuendumu. Maria told me she’s made a beautiful toasty fire and is enjoying precious time with family out bush.

I’m already counting down until her next trip back to Darwin, but until then, please enjoy one of my absolute favourite paintings by the incredibly talented Maria Nampijinpa Brown. Every piece she creates carries so much warmth, story and spirit. ✨

Ngapa Jukurrpa tells the ancestral story of water, a sacred and life-giving force that travels across Country through rain, creeks, soakages, and underground channels. This Dreaming reflects the journeys of ancestral beings who created waterholes and shaped the land, establishing laws for caring for water sources and sharing them respectfully.
