To some, these may look like nothing more than flowing lines across a canvas.

But to Sharon Napanangka Butcher, they are tali, the sand dunes that stretch across the vast Central Australian desert. They are a reflection of Country, painted from generations of knowledge, memory, and connection.

Long before acrylic on canvas, these stories and landscapes were shared through sand drawings, body painting, and ceremony. It’s remarkable to think that these patterns have been passed down for countless generations, inspired not by maps or aerial photographs, but by people who knew every curve of the land through living on it.

When you place Sharon’s painting beside a photograph of the desert dunes, the resemblance is extraordinary.

What a beautiful reminder that Country has always been known, understood, and celebrated by the people who belong to it.

Elah is an incredible artist from Arnhem Land. Each bird is created entirely by hand, from carefully selecting and cutting the tree, to carving the form and hand-painting every detail. So much love, care and cultural knowledge goes into each piece, and you can see Elah's passion for his craft shine through in every bird he creates.

For our Darwin community, Elah has a stall at the Rapid Creek Markets and we strongly encourage you to support him directly.
