A little historical perspective on crochet...

The Secret Power of Crochet: A Thread Through Time

Most people think of crochet as a quiet hobby—something grandmas do while rocking on a porch. But what if I told you that crochet once saved lives, sparked revolutions, and built communities stronger than steel?

Crochet isn’t just about yarn. It’s about history, resilience, and hidden power. While the exact origins are debated, some historians believe crochet techniques date back to ancient Egypt, where similar needlework patterns were found in tombs. But here’s a little-known fact: crochet became a symbol of rebellion during the Irish Potato Famine. Women used it not just to make lace, but to survive. They created delicate pieces and sold them across Europe—feeding their families with every stitch.

In World War I, soldiers were taught to crochet to help them deal with PTSD. The repetitive motion calmed their minds. Some even used crocheted netting for camouflage in trenches. And here’s another secret: in the 1960s, crochet became a quiet form of protest. Women stitched colorful blankets and garments as part of the feminist movement—each loop a silent, powerful statement.

Today, crochet is being rediscovered by a younger generation—not just as art, but as therapy, empowerment, and identity. TikTokers, YouTubers, and influencers are proving that a crochet hook can be as mighty as a microphone.

So next time you see someone with yarn in their hands, remember: they’re not just crafting—they’re carrying forward a legacy woven through centuries of hope, resistance, and love.

Drummoyne Markets on the Move: A New Chapter for Creativity and Community

Drummoyne Markets, a cherished platform for emerging artists and crafters since 2022, is entering an exciting new phase. What began as a simple initiative to create a safe and welcoming space for community connection has grown into something far greater than ever imagined.

In October 2024, with the support of Canada Bay Council, Drummoyne Markets moved to the Top of Drummoyne to coincide with the Drummoyne Art Society’s annual Art Show. The collaboration was a resounding success, drawing crowds and accolades. Building on this momentum, the Council, local businesses, and stallholders are thrilled to announce that the event will return in April 2025.

Meanwhile, from 1st February 2025, Drummoyne Markets will relocate to an indoor space on Lyons Road, adjacent to the Oxford Hotel. This move addresses a pressing need for a weatherproof venue to protect the handmade goods and creations from increasing heat, winds, and rain.

A New Space for Creativity: Every Saturday morning, visitors will discover a diverse array of stalls nestled indoors at this major intersection. The new location provides a relaxed and inviting atmosphere where shoppers can take their time to fully appreciate the talents and handiwork of a wider range of creative individuals. From gifts and homewares to personalized art, apparel and unique crafts, the markets promise inspiration for all ages.

Drummoyne Art and Craft Cooperative: To further nurture local creativity and foster a vibrant Drummoyne community, the founders have established the Drummoyne Art and Crafts Cooperative, under which the Drummoyne Markets now operate. This new initiative strengthens the market’s mission to spotlight artistic talent and enrich the cultural fabric of the area.
