Hello it’s still me!! 👋 I am still here. I know it’s along time between posts but life has been robbing art. I snuck into the humpy today before harvest starts to just play. It’s been so long there’s no water over there and my favourite resin has gone hard (thankfully it’s not a full bottle) Nevertheless I did have a spare dribble in another bottle so I had JUST enough to do this board with matching cutlery. With the weather warming up my mind goes straight to the waters off our beautiful coastline. I’ve got my art fix, maybe now I need some vitamin Sea. 🌊

THE FINAL REVEAL!! This project was supposed to be donated to the local CWA for their ball. When it was cancelled it sat unfinished in the studio. It is a beautiful piece of Jarrah too thick and heavy to be used as a cheese board, so I decided to create my first coffee table. Being the biggest piece it came with a whole different kind of learning. To start with it wasn’t totally level so I had to plane it back. Loads and loads of sanding. Days in fact. The standard ocean theme was the norm. The difference was I wanted to do a clear flood coat over the entire table. Therefore it needed sealing. So I sealed it with sealer. The problem was I could see the brush strokes which I didn’t want. So more sanding. It just turned into a sticky gummy mess. 😩 more sanding. Once it was all off I just added a flood coat onto the raw wood. Not surprisingly it created bubbles. More sanding. Final clear flood coat on and I’m happy with the result. Flip it over and sand the back off. No more sanding🎉 only thing left is to add the legs. How do you add square legs to an odd shaped table? I measured a dozen times and they still looked odd. So in the end I just did it by eye. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. 👌🏽

Ok so I can’t keep this one to myself. It’s not finished yet, but damn I’m loving the look so far. It’s caused a lot of problems, and at this stage the flood coat is bubbling like mad. I may have to sand it off and do another layer. This is why resin products are expensive. Many layers, time and grey hairs go into them.

Want to know something about the boards I create? They are hand made. I am by no means a professional woodworker, hell I barely classify myself as an amateur. My boards still have knots and holes in them. Why? Because it’s character. There will be times a board has bubbles in the resin, and this will nearly drive me to tears. I do EVERYTHING I can to prevent this happening, but sometimes it just doesn’t make any difference. Working with resin is the equivalent of trying to paint the Mona Lisa with water paint and a straw. Resin is like water. It runs like water, and if the board isn’t 100% level then it can all run off leaving bare spots where you can see through it. But you know what that means? Every board is unique. Every board has its own characteristics that make it special. Keep an eye out later for the before and after pictures of the two boards I currently have prepped.

Just because it’s a cheese board doesn’t mean it’s only for cheese. Happy New Year everyone.

It’s been forever!! 😩 life has just got in the way of creativity. So this morning while I was waiting for Brad to load a truck I snuck in to the studio. I needed a black board for my Waverley kitchen/sample hut and I had a spare frame sitting around. So the most craftiest thing I have done for 10 months to “make” a black board. 🤷🏻‍♀️ it’s either a farm project loosely veiled as art or an art project loosely veiled as a farm project 😆 2024 here I come!!
