Some thoughts about the importance of Flowers.
The flowers' gift
A thousand people in their cars, either race past unheeding, or wait at the intersection for the lights to change. Most never give the house a second glance. The shabby, tumble-down fence and the broken propped open gates, don't invite inspection beyond the merest glimpse from the corner of an eye.
The house is no better. Peeling paint, broken guttering, and dull colour choice, combine to give the place an unkempt, neglected appearance. Nothing to attract the eye or invite a second glance."Nothing remarkable here", you might think.
But you would be wrong to dismiss that house, because along the path leading to the front door is a riotous assemblage of containers. There are plant pots , old teapots,jars,polystyrene planters and fruit boxes.There are big pots,broken pots,plastic ones in gaudy colours,as well as one or two quality terra cotta pots. And in each pot,or makeshift container,there is growing a flowering plant-often several plants. Their vibrant colours,a tumbling profusion. Each plant a testament to the care that someone has been giving them.A triumph over their ramshackle surroundings.
Those carefully tended plants in their higgledy piggledy pots, are a symbol of optimism. A celebration of hope.An expression of love, and the need for beauty in one's small patch.
She thought of these things as she woke that day, and the next time she passed, she stopped and took a small colourful ceramic pot; with a flowering plant and placed it carefully by the front door.
She didn't need to meet the resident of that house. The gift would be enough. to show that their effort was worthwhile and appreciated.
