A teacher told me something years ago that I've never forgotten.

You know the feeling. You don't want to look silly. You don't want to be that woman, the one asking too much, pushing too hard, being a nag.

So you nod along on site instead.

And the thing you didn't ask about gets assumed. Built. And it costs you real money to change later.

It's the silent questions that end up costing you.

Let me show you how my crazy brain works.

I checked into the beautiful Mondrian Gold Coast the other week, and while everyone was gawking over the kitchen stone, I was un******ng the walls….yep!

My head was basically doing the maths of what had to have happened behind it, to create that beautiful flush finish nobody is noticing.

I was imagining the stud framing behind the plasterboard. The chippies would have had to allow for the plasterboard thickness. Then the cabinetmaker had to know exactly where that finished plane was, subtract the cupboard door thickness and work out the cabinetry carcass depth.

Then the stonemason would have then come to site to template the gable so the stone finished perfectly flush with the cupboard doors and the plasterboard.

All of that creates that perfect 10 mm shadowline.

Three trades, working at completely different stages, all coordinating for one flush finish that looks completely effortless.

The takeaway? Just remember if you want flush finishes you NEED to communicate early to all trades so they’re all across the detail!

So I guess that’s one way to launch Her Build Edit. 😂 As always, it was taking me about 20 takes to get the right words out of my mouth, so Patty .with.patty had a better idea to get us going...

This is a new series I’ve wanted to create for a while.

A place to sit down with real women who have actually been through building and renovating and talk about what really happened.

What they got right. What they got wrong.

The mistakes they made, the things they wish they knew earlier, the moments that nearly broke them, and hopefully plenty of laughs in between.

I also want to bring in people working inside the industry. Architects, builders, designers, trades and other professionals who can share their own experiences and personal perspectives on what women are navigating when they build or renovate.

Real conversations. Real projects. Different perspectives.

Hopefully something in each conversation makes your own build feel a little easier, gives you a question you hadn’t thought to ask, or simply reminds you that everyone is figuring parts of this out as they go.

Take what’s useful to you. Leave what isn’t.

But most of all, I hope it reminds you that if you’re the woman building or renovating and feeling completely overwhelmed by the decisions, the unknowns, the late night Googling and wondering whether you chose the right colour... you are very much not the only one!!

She’s renovated and flipped 18 homes and is now onto number 19.

And what I thought might be a quick chat turned into nearly two hours of stories about trades, budgets, mistakes, confidence, family, standing your ground and a steel post she absolutely refused to accept 😂 I think you’re going to love her!!

Lighting is one of those things that can feel deceptively simple during a build.

A few downlights here. A pendant there. Maybe a wall light if the room needs something decorative.

But the way a home feels at night is shaped by so much more than the fittings themselves. It’s about where light falls, what it leaves in shadow, how it changes the colour of a material, how it draws your eye through a room, and how different layers work together once the daylight disappears.

That’s why we wanted to host Light in Context inside ZOEI, at dusk.

Not to talk about lighting in isolation, but to actually walk through a finished home and experience what those decisions do in real time.

You’ll see how lighting interacts with stone, timber, joinery, artwork and architecture, and why some spaces feel warm, calm and considered while others can feel flat, even when everything in them is beautiful.

It’s a chance to understand lighting in the way it’s actually experienced, inside a real home, rather than from a plan or a showroom wall.

Pinterest is helpful...BUT it is not a set of instructions.

You might show a builder or trade an image and think the detail is obvious.

But what is obvious to YOU might not be what THEY notice.

→ You love the flush stone. They notice the colour.
→ You love that there is no visible trim. They notice the shape.
→ You love that the junction disappears. They just see "nice bathroom."

So say the detail out loud:

→ I love how this sits flush
→ I love how clean this edge is
→ I love that the junction disappears

That is what turns an image into something that can actually be discussed and delivered.

This is why I’m so passionate about getting into the detail before it gets built.

A missed note here. An unresolved decision there. One assumption nobody questioned.

That tile looked perfect in the showroom...BUT showrooms are built to make everything look good.

Bright lights. Perfect styling. Tiny samples.
Your home is none of those things.

So the finish you fell in love with can look completely different once it is actually in your space.

Two things change it the most:

→ LIGHT. A tile that felt warm under showroom spotlights can read cold and grey in a north-facing room.
→ SIZE. A little sample and a whole wall of it are not the same thing. The colour, the veining and the pattern all shift at full scale.

So before you commit, see it properly:

→ Take the biggest sample they will give you
→ Stand it up where it is actually going
→ Look at it in morning light, afternoon light, and lamp light at night

That is the real test. NOT the showroom.

The showroom is the start...BUT it is not the decision.
