Events like these bring the community together during uncertain times, adding a little spark of resilience and hope to everyday life.

Susan Karike: Spirit of the Flag

This hand-coiled terracotta vessel, carved using sgraffito, a carving technique, is created in honour of Susan Karike, the designer of the Papua New Guinean flag. At just fifteen years old, Karike gave form to a symbol that would unite a nation — a design drawn from her heritage, intuition, and pride.

The carved pattern on this vessel is inspired by the dress she wore when she first designed the flag, a motif that speaks to the deep connection between culture, identity, and art. Through clay and fire, this piece celebrates her enduring legacy as both an artist and a national figure — a young woman whose creativity continues to live in the colours, stories, and spirit of Papua New Guinea.

“Spirit of the Flag” reflects not only the flag’s symbolism, but the resilience and brilliance of the woman who dreamed it into being.
