Surgery prep, but make it Island Respun! 🧵😂

I’m getting ready for an op next week, and apparently I’m going to need a collection of support pillows. So, naturally, I raided the stash rather than going out and buying new things!

❤️🤍 The recovery pillow was made from two pillowcases, with pockets for hot and cold packs (or whatever else I decide to shove in there 🤭). Even the insert from the green cushion got a second life, becoming the middle section, with the leftover stuffing used for the arms.

💚 The seatbelt pillow started life as a larger cushion cover.

💚🤍 The sit-up support pillow? Two pairs of pyjama bottoms, transformed into something useful.

And because apparently I can’t make anything without adding a bit of personality, I broke in my new printer by printing my own Angry O***y Club design onto fabric! A bit of colour with fabric pens, some final embroidery, and we have a very appropriate patch for the occasion. 😂🩷

Three pillows, a whole lot of upcycled materials, and a little bit of angry o***y energy.

Who knew preparing for surgery could involve so much sewing, unpicking, repurposing and giving old things a new life?

When a denim jacket, a lace top, a scarf and a nearly 20-year-old Pegasus cross-stitch come together… 🐎🧵

A bit of upcycling, a whole lot of lace, some unpicking, and an old cross-stitch finally getting its moment to shine!

Front and back, this jacket has had the full Island Respun treatment. ♻️😍

Because why buy new when you can give old things a whole new life? 💚 ♻️

I took one denim jacket, added a sari, and gave it a whole new personality. ✨

A little bit of denim, a whole lot of gorgeous sari fabric, and plenty of stitching later… this jacket happened. 😍

Perfect for those in-between days, with the lightweight sari panels making it a great mid-season jacket without being too heavy.

🧡 Size 18
💰 $80 + postage from Australia.

One-of-a-kind, upcycled and ready for a new wardrobe. DM me if she needs to be yours!

A huge thank you to the incredible Curly Haslam-Coates GC for rocking the runway for me at last night’s Redress Finalists fashion show and awards night!

The Amateur Adults category was packed with extraordinary talent. While I didn’t take home an award, being named a finalist in my very first year of entering is an absolute thrill and something I am deeply proud of.

I received so many kind, positive comments throughout the evening—including an audience member who shared that the piece inspired them to try upcycling their own denim jacket!

A massive thank you goes to the entire The ReDress Hub: keeping it circular team for putting on such a fantastic event. Being part of this inspired me to step right outside my comfort zone, embrace the process, and just have fun with it.

The Look

The Outfit: A three-piece design reconstructed from two mass-produced dresses and a denim jacket.

The Accessories: A custom skull cap and heart necklace, handcrafted to tie the entire runway look together.

Looking Ahead to Next Year

Showcasing accessible, adaptable fashion designed for real bodies and everyday versatility.

Championing alternative models and diverse representation on the runway.

Experimenting with eco-dyeing and botanical printing to push circular design even further.

Onwards and upwards for next year’s collection! ✨🧵🌿

Fashion does not have to come at the cost of people or our planet. 🧵✨

We’ve officially reached the end of our Fast Fashion Facts campaign! Over the past few weeks, we’ve explored the real human and environmental costs behind the clothing industry—and the everyday choices we can make to spark positive change.

That is why Island ReSpun exists.

We see value where others see waste. Instead of relying on new, resource-heavy materials, we rescue and repurpose existing textiles—turning pre-loved fabrics into durable, one-of-a-kind handmade pieces right here in Tasmania.

Every repaired garment, every second-hand treasure, and every upcycled piece helps keep good materials circulating and out of landfill.

When you choose Island ReSpun, you are choosing:

🌿 Upcycled & repurposed textiles that give existing fabrics a meaningful second life

🪡 Handmade local craft created with intention, care, and quality

🔁 Circular fashion that values people, creativity, and the planet over mass production

Thank you so much for following along, sharing your thoughts, and championing the slow fashion movement with us. 💚

Choose better. Wear longer. Support local.

Slowing down fashion doesn't happen alone—it is a movement we build together. 🌿✨

We don't need a handful of people doing sustainability perfectly. We need a whole community making thoughtful choices every single day.

Here is how you can be part of the slow fashion movement:
• 🔁 Wear it longer — Cherish and rewear what you own.
• 🪡 Mend it when you can — Simple stitches keep clothes in circulation.
• 💛 Choose quality over quantity — Invest in pieces with meaning, craft, and durability.

Thank you for following along with our fast fashion education series! If you enjoyed learning with us, you can support our mission with three simple steps:

1. Follow along for more tips, mending ideas, and slow fashion inspiration.
2. Share these posts with a friend to help spread the word.
3. Support local makers who are keeping textiles out of landfill.
Together, we can rethink fashion, one garment at a time. 🧵

e continue wrap up our fast fashion education series, remember this: you have the power to shape the future of fashion. 🧵✨

Every dollar you spend is a vote for the kind of world you want to live in.

Choosing better fashion does not mean being perfect. It simply means slowing down and making more thoughtful choices:
• 🌿 Buy less, choose well — Focus on quality over quantity.
• 🪡 Repair before replacing — Give your clothes extra life with a quick stitch.
• 🧺 Support second-hand & local makers — Keep existing fabrics in use and back people in your community.

At Island ReSpun, we are proud to give existing textiles a new purpose, turning what was once discarded into something durable and meaningful.

Thank you for joining us throughout this series. Let’s keep caring for our clothes, our community, and our planet.

For the past few weeks, we have been looking closely at the real cost of our clothes. 🧵🌿

We have learned that the impact of fast fashion goes far beyond the checkout counter. It drains our freshwater, relies heavily on plastics and fossil fuels, creates mountains of landfill waste, and often ignores the basic rights of the people who make our clothes.

But we have also learned that we have the power to change the story.

Every time we choose to:
• Wear our clothes longer
• Learn to mend a seam
• Buy second-hand or upcycled pieces
• Support local, sustainable makers..we are actively fighting back against throwaway culture.

Awareness is the first step. Action is the next. Thank you for following along with our series and for caring about the future of fashion.

At Island ReSpun, we will keep turning existing textiles into something beautiful, useful, and lasting.

Bonus Fast Fashion Fact #16: Donating clothes does not solve the problem

Donating clothes feels good, but it does not fix fast fashion waste on its own. 🧺

In Australia, we donate massive piles of clothing every week. But our op shops receive far more than they have space to sell. Only about 15% to 20% of donated items ever make it onto local shop racks.

The rest is often:
• Shipped overseas in large bundles
• Cut into industrial cleaning rags
• Sent directly to landfill

Donating is still better than throwing clothes in the red rubbish bin, but reducing and reusing must come first.

Before you clear out your wardrobe, ask yourself:
Can I fix it or restyle it?
Can I swap it with a friend?
Did I really get enough wear out of it?

At Island ReSpun, we take existing fabrics and give them a second life right here at home—and we love finding incredible clothing and textile gems in local op shops!

My favourite recent thrift find has to be an amazing black and green Black Friday jacket—originally retailing for around $150, snapped up for just $25. 🖤💚
