🔥 THIS is why a chimney sweep should be more than just a quick clean! 👀

At first glance, you’d probably never know there was anything wrong here.

But during the inspection, I found a section of flue that had completely disconnected inside the chimney.

That means smoke and combustion gases may not be travelling where they’re supposed to and could instead escape into the chimney cavity. 🏠

It’s a great example of why I always have a proper look around while sweeping. Sometimes it’s the things hidden out of sight that are the most important to find. 🔍

A clean flue is important, but knowing everything is where it should be is just as important. 🧹

🔧 Before & After – Flue Cowl Replacement

Sometimes it's the small upgrades that make a big difference.

This older rain hat was replaced with a new stainless steel cowl, helping to:
✅ Keep rain out of the flue
✅ Reduce birds and debris entering the chimney
✅ Protect the flue from unnecessary moisture
✅ Give the chimney a fresh, tidy finish

A damaged or ageing cowl can allow water into your flue, which may contribute to rust, corrosion and premature wear over time.

If your cowl is looking worse for wear, it might be time for an upgrade.

🏡 Simple improvements can make a big difference!

This older-style brick chimney is still in good condition, but there are a few simple upgrades that can improve performance and help reduce ongoing maintenance.

✔️ Install a quality stainless steel bird guard or cowl to keep birds and debris out.
✔️ Replace old chicken wire if it's rusting or damaged.
✔️ Check the mortar joints and chimney crown for any signs of deterioration.
✔️ Have the flue professionally swept and inspected each year to ensure it's safe and free from creosote build-up.

Many older stone and brick homes are built to last—keeping the chimney maintained means you can continue enjoying your wood heater safely for years to come.

👀 This is what a clean flue looks like!

Looking up through the flue, you can see a light, even coating of soot with no heavy creosote or blockages restricting airflow.

A clean flue means:
✅ Better airflow
✅ More efficient burning
✅ Less smoke
✅ Lower risk of chimney fires

Regular sweeping not only keeps your heater running efficiently, but also allows us to inspect your flue for any signs of damage or excessive creosote before they become a problem.

🔥 Ever wondered what this plate inside your wood heater does?

This is called the baffle plate.

Its job is to slow and redirect the hot gases and smoke before they enter the flue. This helps:
✅ Improve heat output
✅ Increase burning efficiency
✅ Reduce heat loss up the chimney
✅ Lower creosote build-up when your fire is burning correctly

A damaged, warped, or missing baffle plate can affect your heater's performance and may even lead to excessive smoke and poor draft.

It's one of the key components we inspect during a chimney sweep to ensure your heater is operating safely and efficiently.
