Traditional art mediums are designed to BUILD thick layers. That’s literally what they’re made for. ✨
Joint compound isn’t.
I get messages all the time from people saying they tried making thick florals with joint compound and their art cracked. So I wanted to show you a real visual comparison 👀
If you pause this video and look closely, you’ll see the cracks through the joint compound piece. Meanwhile impasto gel, standard modelling paste, and light modelling paste all held up beautifully.
That doesn’t mean joint compound can’t be used in textured art. It absolutely can. But understanding how to use each medium and the thickness limits makes a huge difference in how your art lasts over time.
A lot of people skip one very important step:
👉 Reading the thickness recommendations on the tub or product description.
Art mediums are usually formulated with layering guidance. Joint compound often isn’t designed for the same depth or flexibility as traditional art mediums.
I’ll do another video showing how differently these mediums behave once paint is mixed in because that opens up a WHOLE other conversation 🎨
If you love learning the “why” behind textured art instead of just copying recipes, follow along. I teach all of this inside my courses so you can create textured art that not only looks beautiful… but actually lasts 🤍
