When Ruby first came to us, she had almost zero experience with mosaics-she’d never even held a pair of glass nippers! But experience isn't required when you have positivity, patience, and perseverance. Ruby determinedly rose to the challenge, mastering The D&H Technique to bring this stunning raccoon portrait to life. Kala and I could not be prouder of her and this beautiful accomplishment! 🌟

​I’ve just finished another macaw, called ‘Quinn’! I’ve had far too much fun working with colour that I went on a bit of a roll with these birds, and made four of them. One flew away to Tasmania. I’m still deciding what my next project will be….hmmmm…..

FROM HAMMER TO MASTERPIECE: UNBELIEVABLE STUDENT SUCCESS WITH THE D&H TECHNIQUE! 🔨➡️🐱

Take a close look at this stunning mosaic by Julie Barker. Up until she completed our May course, she had only ever used a HAMMER to cut pieces to make a mosaic! Can you believe it?

Kala and I are so impressed that she completed her cat, named ‘Binx’, to such an exceptionally high level for such an inexperienced, but obviously very talented artist!

By applying the D&H Technique for Realism, Julie learned how to move beyond rough hammer cuts to shaping hand-cut glass shards, controlling directional flow (andamento), and layering light and shade to create realistic fur and lifelike eyes. The D&H Technique seems to work so well for anyone who takes their mosaic work seriously-giving you the exact blueprint to turn simple glass into fine art!

We are so happy with Julie’s beautiful cat!

🦜 Meet 'Harley'-our latest Harlequin Macaw mosaic, completely done and dusted!
I really wanted to push the boundaries of glass realism with this piece, creating a living, breathing 3D effect. Some of the detailing was so intricate it felt like micro-mosaic!
Size: 46cm x 56cm (18” x 22”)
it took me Less than 4 weeks to hand-cut and piece together.
While hyper-realism isn’t everyone's personal style, I’ve found that developing these precision skills has completely transformed my overall mosaic abilities-no matter what style of project I'm working on.
