Part of making pleated lampshades involves a technique that goes by the name of ‘streetly stitch’. So, what is this?

Streetly stitch is vertical stitching from the base of the rings, as well as diagonally, linking them together; from the side they form a Z shape. It is used for hand sewing the outer layers and linings onto the frame.
Extremely secure and long lasting, it was originally used by glove makers.

There is something timeless about a perfectly pleated lampshade ✨

Here’s how I do it.

First, fabric selection - whether it’s linen, silk or cotton, fabric should be high quality. High quality means a long lasting lampshade. The fabric is then folded vertically to create soft lines. Different widths can be selected depending on the size of your desired shade.

Next, the lamp is lined. The beauty of lining a lampshade with a balloon or a pleated lining controls how the light softens and adds depth. It also hides metalware and stitching, giving a fuller and smoother finish, complete with beautiful braiding or bias binding.

At last, the lamp is secured using streetly stitching, with both top and bottom rings completed with braid or bias binding.
