Treasures and tubs

Change is afoot. An exciting project and a studio move have me occupied and classes begin this week.

Busy times.

Better buy buckets and spend hours removing the shop stickers. 💡

Back at the wheel.

I was thinking ‘tulip’ as I played with the profile of these forms; the sound of the word rather than the flower itself.

It still amazes me how the slightest alteration in line can transform a vessel. In this instance I was considering where the widest point of the curve was situated - the hip, if you like.

Somewhere between a third and a half way up feels right.

I was thinking of tulips but when I looked for images their buds weren’t quite how I had imagined them.

Nature is so often a source of inspiration but sometimes memory’s intervention serves us better.

Apologies for the scraping sound. It shows how quiet it was in the warehouse yesterday. It feels good to be back. 🌷

A visit to the Brohan Museum in Berlin today has well and truly inspired me.

The permanent collection holds examples of Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Functionalism, ranging from exquisite individual pieces to mass-produced items.

The third floor was entirely ceramic. I was blown away by the collection’s 350 odd cake plates. Citing the museum’s text - “almost all date from the era of the Weimar Republic and combine the influences of Art Deco, the Bauhaus, Cubism and Constructivism.”

Thank you for having me The quotations included in the wall text helped me feel right at home. 😉

I have returned to my accommodation to sketch and absorb.

Yesterday, in Toulouse, I had the good fortune of almost literally stumbling into the potier Thierry Basile, as he sat perched outside his shop on Rue des Paradoux.

Dear pottery enthusiasts and guests of Madame Voyage | Slow Travel French Retreats (whom I am so excited to meet tomorrow!) if you happen to have extra time in Toulouse, I thoroughly recommend a visit.

His work is wonderfully chaotic - loose and assured, like the man himself. It is honest and strong and full of whimsy. I sense his brain exploded onto every surface. I was not surprised to hear he is also a jazz musician.

I acquired a bowl, which I intend to show, tell and enthuse over at our pottery retreat.

Toulouse is amazing.

I am so glad to know I will return next year. Bookings are open and filling quickly for the two weeks on offer in October 2027. The month, I am told, that live music is in full swing here.

Please follow the link in my bio if you would like to join me in this inspiring environment.
