🎨 Tonight I’m heading to a lecture at the NGV on Elisabetta Sirani, one of the most fascinating female artists of the Baroque period. 🎨✨

Born in 1638 in Bologna, Sirani was a highly talented painter who gained recognition in a male-dominated art world and became known for her religious, historical, and mythological works. She also helped pave the way for other women artists by founding a school for female painters.

As someone who paints and loves art history, I can’t wait to learn more about her life, work, and legacy. 🎨

This statue of the goddess Venus dates back to 2nd century CE. Made of marble, it depicts the goddess emerging from a bath. Originally her arms which are now lost covered her nakedness. And if you notice her hair, it still has traces of darker colour pigment.

When we look at these ancient sculptures today we see them in their rawness. But sculptures during the ancient Roman and Greek times were usually painted with vibrant colours. It’s just that over time those pigments fade and disappear.

You can see this sculpture and many more ancient artefacts at the ROME exhibtion at Melbourne Museum!
