CRACKIN’ THE GRITTY KILN 🤍

Always a huge bubbly moment of built up anticipation - doesn’t matter if you did everything textbook, there is still a great possibility that nothing inside this huge furnace actually came out as expected.

Today, we are doing a little gritty dance. Every piece is near perfect. A rare moment in pottery land.

This is a new glaze formula for my tried and true “OYSTER” matte white glaze. I have been working on the chemistry for nearly a year trying to get it to resist cutlery marking and be a bit more durable for commercial kitchens. Did you know that it’s not the glaze that scratches, but the soft metal from the utensils actually wearing off from the microscopic crystal formations that make mattes, mattes?!? Material science is next level fascinating.

Matte glazes, especially white, are notorious for leaving silverware marks - but chefs are willing to take the bad with the good - truth is, you just can’t beat a crisp matte white finish. Hopefully this helps the team a bit to reduce the time needed to scrub the marks off between services.

These are for and the team at and they are also in heavy rotation at the team’s other venue .restaurant .

Grateful as always for the time & space to get these things right for the restaurants I choose to creatively partner with. The details DO matter, in both the finished product and steps in the making process - it just keeps good flow for the bigger picture, longevity of the investment and overall service experience.

And grateful to ma-gurl .pottery for the muscles and good vibes to help me get all these glazed and loaded.

AN EMU HUNT / Banjo Patterson

West of Dubbo the west begins
The land of leisure and hope and trust,
Where the black man stalks with his dogs and gins
And Nature visits the settlers’ sins
With the Bogan shower, that is mostly dust.
When the roley-poley’s roots dry out
With the fierce hot winds and the want of rain,
They come uprooted and bound about
And dance in a wild fantastic rout
Like flying haystacks across the plain.

And the horses shudder and snort and shift
As the bounding mass of weeds goes past,
But the emus never their heads uplift
As they look for roots in the sandy drift,
For the emus know it from first to last.

Now, the boss’s dog that had come from town
Was strange to the wild and woolly west,
And he thought he would earn him some great renown
When he saw, on the wastes of the open down,
An emu standing beside her nest.

And he said to himself as he stalked his prey
To start on his first great emu hunt,
“I must show some speed when she runs away,
For emus kick very hard, they say;
But I can’t be kicked if I keep in front.”

The emu chickens made haste to flee
As he barked and he snarled and he darted around,
But the emu looked at him scornfully
And put an end to his warlike glee
With a kick that lifted him off the ground.

And when, with an injured rib or two,
He made for home with a chastened mind,
An old dog told him, “I thought you knew
An emu kicks like a kangaroo,
And you can’t get hurt—if you keep behind.”

It's challenging to find clarity when confidence is low and everyone's got an opinion on which is the best direction to go, what designs to make, what business move is the next one to take.
Been there. Still there.

A never ending tug of war to try and please everyone leaves you nothing but drained, un inspired and burnt to a crisp.

GRIT is the long game - daily problems to solve, critical decisions to make and life lessons to learn. And a few pots in between!

Being able to stay the course and cut through the pressure, the opinions, criticisms & praises is a discipline that cannot be taught - you have to live it, feel the pain of it, embody the ecstasy of the breakthroughs and always search for a better way.

The wisdom that is deeper than the noise of the world is the only guide we should give heed to - because on the other side of that external resistance and confusion is a level of self confidence that cannot be shaken, when you let that inner self be the guiding light.

Let’s go there together.

Stay gritty ✌🏽
