These photos were just too good not to share 😍 Burl Featured WA Blackbutt Slab supplied by Ugly Duckling Timber Co. and finished with dark green resin by Jade Off the Grain by J&N Designs.

The honey caramel tones are inset with awesome burl feature and birdseyes creating a pretty unusual shape and an awesome character piece.

This was the first time we have used Whittle Wax UV oil as this slab is exposed to the elements and needs a little extra protection. Jade did a phenomenal job and we are pretty impressed how it turned out!

WA Blackbutt is one of the few blonde timber's that is hardy enough to withstand an exposed environment. Unfortunately demand outstrips supply as it is getting harder to source (and more popular).

After seeing how well this one turned out, Yours Truly is keeping one off the pack for our own little project piece. We do still have a couple more and will be getting more figured WA Blackbutt into stock soon.

If you have a project in mind please don't hesitate to get in touch 🙂

Finally the sun is out this weekend after the last 2 weeks of rain! Whilst it's been wet and miserable we have been busy collaborating with Jade from Off the Grain by J&N Designs to bring a couple of small furniture pieces to life in amongst the usual hustle in the yard.

It usually starts with Yours Truly pulling piece from the shed and machining it for offcuts, then seeing its something special calling in Jade for a look and then a distraction is born... We both have plenty of work to keep busy but curiosity kills the cat and some slabs just need to be worked up!😅

All these pieces have been resin filled and worked to the highest standard, before being finished with Odies Oil for a long lasting, waterproof and easy repair finish.

First up we have a stunning Birdseye Jarrah Slab, with natural edge feature one end and boxed in with crystal clear resin the other. Measuring in at 1950x400mm mounted on double square low-line trapezoid legs, Thai would make a showstopper coffee table / tv stand or bed end!
It's red though orange coloration would pop against a light decor providing contrast that draws the eye to it.

ASKING PRICE $650

Next up is a natural edge WA Blackbutt Console table with matching shelf. These slabs are off the same tree, and have striking pale sapwood with a solid detailed natural edge that flows into the classic caramel and deep honey colors that make WA Blackbutt so desirable. This piece would suit all color pallets from Hamptons style white right though to contrasting a jarrah floor or dark paint pallete.
Measuring in at 2020x340 for the table, and 1710x180 for the matching shelf.

ASKING PRICE $750 *SOLD*

Finally we have an unusually shaped Curly Flame Jarrah Console Table with matching shelf. The slab presents almost two tone with the pale sapwood feeding into bright red jarrah, with the black resin highlighting the natural features in the timber. Its half oblique shape is unusual and is why this piece caught our attention!
The table measures at 1710x390mm and the matching shelf 1130x190mm.

ASKING PRICE $650

For those that follow us, you may remember back in December we hauled home around 35 ton of logs.

Just before Christmas, the call was made to run these through the mill. Normally, we wouldn't process timber in the heat of summer as it can shock dry, but as these logs had been sitting on the landing for a couple of years, the decision was made that it was better to process them before they deteriorated.

With the help of James Turner from James Turner Woodworking, over the course of three days we managed to run around 150 slabs in Jarrah, Blackbutt and Sheoak.

Now it is winter and the heat of summer has passed the hard part begins, and we will strip these out to start the drying process. Hopefully in around 5 years these slabs will have completely seasoned and be ready for sale!

The long drying times are the primary reason that we don't process a lot of green logs at Ugly Duckling Timber Co. Our preference is always to buy dry seasoned timber where possible but as Jarrah (and all WA hardwood it seems) is getting harder to source. This was an investment in our future.

There are some cracking slabs in these packs! All of the leftovers were processed into Firewood, and nothing went to waste.

For now, Yours Truly better get back to work as I have 150 slabs to strip out…

At Ugly Duckling Timber we have a little timber p**n to end the long weekend!

With all the wood that passes through the yard it is extremely rare for Yours Truly to see something that is so unique and different to anything we have ever seen before! So when I saw a batch of what appeared to be Birdseye Marri slabs come up for sale I couldn't resist but to purchase then out of sheer curiosity...

In the rough sawn form, we could tell these would be something special, but it wasn't until we machined them we got a true appreciation of what these beauties really were!

The grain on these slabs is beyond Birdseye, it presents almost like the whole tree was a Burl. Full of Birdseye patterns, patches of interlocked crotchwood and fiddleback framed by the pockmarked edges that are characteristic of a highly figured tree.

We took a few samples of these slabs and Jade from Off the Grain by J&N Designs resin filled, then sanded to a fine finish to bring these to life. Finished with Kustom Grit hard wax oil, they are polished to a high natural wax shine.

This would have to be one of the most polarizing batches of timber we have had. Some people absolutely love it and for some people it is just too crazy!

These samples are being sold as a hallway table and matching floating shelves. This would be a true statement piece and talking point in any house.

The hallway table measures in at 1500x330mm and is mounted on 700mm tall hairpin legs. The floating shelves each measure 750x250 and perfectly complement the table.

This Marri radiates a honey gold with deep caramel tones. Depending on lighting, it changes color and from all angles the grain exudes detail. Every time I look at it I see something different.

This is a one of a kind item, the price for the set is $1100.

It’s that time of year when Yours Truly puts my work shorts away for the season and breaks out the overalls – Autumn. This also means its firewood season, and at the time of writing this we are well underway! Crispy cold nights are upon us already, (we hit -1C camping at the yard on the weekend), and it looks like the rains will be here this weekend!

This year we have a whole range of firewood options to beat the chill, but unfortunately not the stock levels we have had in previous years, so we are expecting to run out before the end of the season.

At the time of posting we still have the following:

Pure Split Jarrah - $350
Pure Jarrah Mill Ends - $250
Pure Jarrah Offcuts - $250
Mixed Hardwood Offcuts - $200
Marri Offcuts - $120

All are sold as IBC cage loads (minus the cage), totalling approx. 1.2 cubic meters.

Due to fuel costs and workload we are unable to offer delivery this year. We can arrange pickup from the Neergabby and Two Rocks yards as needed.

Fresh Timber Alert!

We just received a fresh batch of Marri at Ugly Duckling Timber. All seasoned 13+ years these slabs are ready to be made into something special!

With a mix of clean and gum featured, and lengths to a massive 8.1m these will be added to our ever growing stockpile.

They say curiosity killed the cat, and whilst no cats were harmed in this process, curiosity definitely killed my productivity! (I had to see what we had sourced 😅)

We have machined a small sample of what came in to see how they look. And they look fantastic! A whole mix of colours and gum feature, we also have cleaner packs for those looking for an easy DIY.

Due to the heat we are working odd hours this week (5pm till late). If you are looking for that perfect piece please get in touch!

How's everyone's Friday going? At Ugly Duckling Timber we don't have a pool, so decided the best way to cool down after hand pulling 4 ton of Jarrah sleepers in 40 degrees was to enjoy some pressure washer mist!

How's the patina on these old beauties 😍

Happy long weekend! We will be open tomorrow 12-3 in Neergabby for those headed past.
