It all started with the aim to bridge the gap in the market creating commercial grade cushions versatile enough for any contemporary interior and suitable commercial projects spanning over long timelines. ​​​​​​​​

After selling out of our first release,​​​​​​​​

Did you know, that even though Noongar Country is the biggest in Australia, it is virtually impossible to source commercial grade Noongar fabrics? ​​​​​​​​

And this is why Karlup began. ​​​​​​​​

When I was looking in the design market I could see fabrics featuring artwork from over East, & the Pilbara/Kimberley regions, but nothing local. We just felt a little bit behind here in Perth and also I saw many collaborations happening with artists from remote communities but little recognition of mob living in cities. ​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
I wanted to change that. ​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
I wanted to challenge this stereotypical view of Aboriginal people and introduce fabrics into the Perth market that were appropriate for use in Perth and connected to Noongar Country. ​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
This range now includes wallpapers, rugs, & cushions sharing specifically Noongar art styles and will soon be expanding into a heavy commercial rated fabric for custom upholstery. ​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
Because it's not just about bringing Aboriginal fabrics into a space for the sake of it, it's about showing a meaningful connection to Country and respecting the diversity within our First Nations. ​​​​​​​​

Ok so a few times now I have been looking to specify items for interior projects and have asked suppliers if they have any Noongar items, to which they have said "Yes!" and returned with items created by artists from over East, the Pilbara, Central Desert etc... ​​​​​​​​

Noongar does not refer to just anyone that is Aboriginal, it refers to mob who come from the South West region of WA, stretching from below Geraldton right down to East of Esperance. ​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
As amazing as it is to see Indigenous designs becoming more prominent in the mainstream industry, please respect the differences between Countries & understand the stories you are promoting and where they are from. And please don't promote something as something it is not. ​​​​​​​​

The Moodjar tree is most prominent during Birak season and is sometimes referred to as the Noongar or West Australian Christmas tree. The Moodjar tree holds great spiritual significance to Noongar people and should not be disturbed.

However, the idea of bringing these golden ochres into a kitchen or ensuite design presents a great opportunity to create an iconicly West Australian space, inspired by a truly unique plant.

✨ Aboriginal artwork is a language; a form of communication of maintaining and passing down stories that have been in our culture for tens of thousands of years. ​​​​​​​​

✨ Before written language was introduced Aboriginal artwork was a tool for sharing and capturing knowledge and stories. ​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
✨ Every art piece tells a story and connects to a particular place, mob, Country or cultural practice. ​​​​​​​​

✨ Aboriginal art can show stories that connect across multiple locations, or translate Dreamings connected to specific regions. ​​​​​​​​

I was 12 when I found out the truth about my heritage. ​​​​​​​​

While it did come as a surprise at the time, things also clicked for me. I have always felt a deep connection to the land around me and like there was something missing from who I was. ​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
I have been drawn to trees, always look down to acknowledge where I am standing, and have had this deep urge to bring smoke and sands into almost every theatre performance I did at WAAPA (Well I tried anyway... ) Because I just needed to hold it and feel it and it felt right. ​​​​​​​​

I always felt like Country was calling me and finally I feel home. ​​​​​​​​

What do we mean by commercial grade fabric?

Fabric is classed as commercial rated when it has a Martindale of 30,000 or more. This refers to the number of rubs the fabric can endure before it starts to deteriorate.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Why is this important though?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Essentially commercial grade fabric is more durable than other residential and non-commercial rated fabrics making it perfect for high traffic areas and tough conditions.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This means our cushions are highly durable and perfect for families with kids, pets, messy adults, or businesses wanting to incorporate some Aboriginal artwork into their office. And as an added bonus all our covers can be removed for cleaning purposes!

It's a new year, and it's been a while.... so! I thought I would reintroduce myself.​​​​​​​​

I'm Leah! The director, owner and founder of LPD. Karlup, the offshoot homewares brand of ​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
I'm a proud Wudjari Noongar woman and for the last few years have been diving into my heritage to find out more about myself, my ancestors & culture and bringing this into the contemporary world through interior design. ​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
I'm a ta**us through and through and once I've made my mind up about something, that's it. So much so that after noticing a lack of luxury Aboriginal homewares available my stubbornness took over and I started my second business, LPD.Karlup. ​​​​​​​​
