To introduce some colour in conjunction with the black kitchen, I chose this green from . The clients were happy to adopt it.

As a colour, it is still 'moody' yet has biophilic properties. Integrates nature element and conveys an atmosphere of relaxation, balancing all other elements and textures. It also adds an element of surprise and interest, as it is at the house's connecting point - visible from the front door, bedroom corridor or the kitchen area.

The Bulgarian trace in Perth's architectural heritage. 😊

Iwan Iwanoff's houses (built between 1958 and 1983) are coveted architectural gems in Perth. Designed with his famous focus on detail, influenced by the era he lived in, and the new affordable materials coming up during that time, they are not for everyone's taste.

Instead, they create a life-long and intimate following, often coming from childhood spent within their walls. The homes he designed are not many, and if one comes to the market, it usually attracts a premium price.

Some months ago, I attended the exhibition 'Émigré Modernism: Bauhaus to Brutalism'. Iwanoff was known for designing all elements of the homes - from built-in bars to the dining chairs.

Two of the these pieces were showcased there. Both in style very true to the times during which they were created. However, they inspired me with their sculptural forms that, in contrast to many contemporary furniture pieces, incorporate a sense of stability and comfort.

The homes of the Past. ❤️This is Kovachevitsa, in my Bulgaria.

Homes were 100% biodegradable, 100% organic, and intrinsically promoting socialisation and communal living. Children were raised by 'the whole village', elderly were not lonely and still living in their own homes contributing to the life of youngsters.

While not fit for modern lifestyle, we shouldn't forget traditional homes and their architecture. Instead, we can derive ideas for problem solutions and incorporate an amalgamation of old-new in our contemporary homes.

Can't wait to visit again and dive deeper in these lessons!

WHO IS YOUR DESIGNER #2

I do work well with both neutral and bold colour palettes, but my natural inclination is to the later. It is probably because I was born and grew up in Bulgaria.

As one of the oldest countries in Europe, Bulgaria's rich culture mixes elements of many ethnicities and civilizations. As a result, traditional crafts, wooden and stone architecture, and natural dyes were all part of my upbringing. The subsequent period of Communism introduced the Brutalist architecture style, and the buildings and spaces were almost stripped from decoration.

So today, I value the benefits that natural materials and beautiful spaces bring into one's life. But also deeply understand the advantage of simplicity that reduces the complexity in our lives.

The answer, I believe, is in the Golden Mean. To feel content in life and in the spaces one occupy, one might seek "the desirable middle between two extremes, one of excess and the other of deficiency".

Project in the making.

For this home, both clients felt comfortable in all-black spaces, which they wanted for their new kitchen and main bedroom.

Starting with reference to boho-industrial style, the rooms developed into eclectic yet contemporary look.

The kitchen is functionally divided into four clearly defined zones. This makes the use of space predictable, as well as easy to organise and clean.

Can't wait to see this project come to life and to share photos of the finished spaces!
