House Nerd Sharing our renovations on our 70s fixer-upper and home tours of all sizes & budgets
house-nerd.com We now have a new website!

Written by freelance journalist and Perth girl Maya Anderson, House Nerd is a blog that offers sneak peeks into inspiring Australian houses of all kinds. There's renovated worker's cottages to contemporary beach homes, warehouse conversions to tiny new builds made from recycled materials, contemporary apartments to sprawling old riverside mansions. We share all different kinds of houses, but they

all have one thing in common - they're warm and inviting real homes. Maya visits people’s houses and tells their renovating, building and decorating stories (and disaster stories!). Her favourite stories tend to be the β€˜before and after’ ones - nothing more inspiring than seeing grotty before photos! She also shares her own renovating progress on her own house, a 1970s "Crap Shack" in Perth suburbia, where she lives with her family - husband Mr Nerd, Border collie x Labrador Nala and baby, Little Nerd. You can check it out at www.house-nerd.com to take the key, enjoy a home tour or several and come away inspired! You can still enjoy all the old content - at http://www.house-nerd.com/blog/

I couldn't resist jumping on this super-cute AI Peter Rabbit trend when I saw it. These pictures make me so happy! They bring back so much childhood nostalgia 😊 We have all enjoyed looking at them, yep even my hubby πŸ˜†

I love all the pictures but the one with Luka on our new sofa is probably my favourite 🐢 (it's the Dawson from btw and it's amazing, so comfy!) I cracked up at some of the weird random details the AI generator came up with, like the little Beatrix Potter versions of the bottles in our kitchen ( ). You have to try this trend. I promise it will make you smile! πŸ‘πŸ’›

We got chickens! Only took me a couple of years to grind Mr Nerd down πŸ’ͺ🏽😜 "We only need two or three," I wheedled, but somehow we have wound up with nine πŸ˜… You can see how excited Mr Nerd looks about that 😁

Introducing our backyard beauties and yard destroyers: Sylvia, Ella, Mrs Morgan, Taco, Hen Solo, Bettina, Buttercup, Daphne and Dora. Sadly it looks like our very cuddly, unfortunately Wyandotte Bettina is looking like she might be a rooster 😭 so we will have to find a new home for Bert.

Initially we got chicks and two pullets from . Then I saw our English bruisers (the big white Sussex hens) on Gumtree looking for a new home, and I was like, "What's two more?" Ok, so it turns out two more is a lot more when they are the sheer size of Daphne and Dora πŸ˜¬πŸ˜… But they are all so sweet and so funny. I am obsessed.

Some of you will remember our very old previous chook Chicken Nugget - Miss Nerd was gutted when she died and she is SO happy to have so many chickens now. Even though all the big hens were scared of us initially, within a week Miss Nerd had worn them all down and given them all Stockholm Syndrome. She is a chicken whisperer πŸ” We can't figure it out because she is basically the loudest, most frenetic person in the world but for some reason animals love her.

Anyway, if you need me, I basically just live in my backyard now, drinking coffee and watching my chickens πŸ€“

This is where I want to be on a drizzly day like today, curled up inside with the sound of rain on a tin roof πŸ–€πŸ‘πŸŒ§οΈ This is , the cosiest workers cottage and owned by my friend and her husband Andrew. They bought it just before the pandemic and then slowly fixed it up through lockdowns and restrictions - with two little kids in tow to boot!
Originally built for workers of Millars Timber and Trading Company, the house is in the tiny south west town of Quinninup. I will admit I had never even heard of Quinninup until Jade bought a property there πŸ™ˆ Now? Mr Nerd and I want our own little cottage there πŸ˜† Until then, we'll content ourselves with visiting Jade's.
Tucked beside spectacular karri forest a short stroll to beautiful Karri Lake, this home is quiet, grounding and feels magic. It's one of my favourite cottages - I love the vintage, gathered interiors, it's so comfortable, beautiful and thoughtfully done. This place feels so calming. You arrive here and feel you can let out a breath you didn't even know you were holding. The perfect place for a couples getaway or escape with friends 🍷 Full post on my blog πŸ–€πŸ‘

Recently, we said goodbye to our beautiful Nala πŸ’” Our soul dog for sure.
Nala loved people fiercely. Even non-dog people and those scared of big dogs would come round after meeting Nala. She gave forceful hugs, where she would press her head against your heart and croon to you while giving you love eyes 😍 If she met you once and liked you, you were locked into her memory forever. You could go years without seeing her, but when she saw you again she would remember you and that you were friends and where have you been?! She talked a lot.
Nala loved a party, especially birthdays (because cake + singing + showing off her tricks) πŸŽ‰πŸ₯³ She liked nothing more than being the centre of attention. She slept every night on our bed, insisting on having her head on the pillow, tucked in and spooned by Mr Nerd under the doona in winter; the hairy third person in our marriage.
Nala loved the beach, eating and high fives. I've never known a dog who loved the camera so much; she took great pride in her modelling. She never cared much for children, becoming martyr-like as she put up with them invading our home πŸ˜† Since puppyhood, she always had a great disdain for other dogs, except for her sweet bestie Molly. She drove us crazy barking when you opened the washing machine. She got huffy when you tried to shove her because she was taking up all the space on the bed. But somehow Nala was always perfectly imperfect in her obstinacy and rudeness and fierce intensity.
We are sad, and the house feels so empty. I know we're lucky to have had her for 13 years, but man she left a big hole. She grew up with us as we became adults; and everyone we knew adored this weird crazy dog. I will be eternally grateful that she passed peacefully and painlessly with us both there, snuggled in our arms at home, being reminded of how cool she is πŸ˜ŽπŸ’›
