Most people are a little nervous to use black in crochet, but I love it. Black makes the colours pop even brighter, and this corner-to-corner granny blanket is proof. The neon shades just shine against the dark background, and I couldn’t be happier with how it’s turning out.

What’s your favourite colour?

ANZAC Day in Pitt Town – A Tribute Made Possible by Community Spirit

Each year on April 25th, our community comes together to remember the courage, sacrifice, and enduring spirit of the ANZACs and those who serve in our defence force. But behind the stillness and solemnity of the service lies months of quiet dedication from a group of volunteers and community members whose efforts ensure this day is honoured with the care it deserves.

Pitt Town’s ANZAC Day service wouldn’t be possible without the tireless work of the planning committee and volunteers. From organising road closures, sound systems, and seating, to coordinating wreath-laying, guest speakers, and the involvement of local schools and veterans—the entire morning is shaped by those who generously give their time and hearts to this tradition.

In true Pitt Town spirit, locals came together to help set up at first light, hand out programs, and assist attendees both young and old. Their efforts reflect the essence of ANZAC Day itself—mateship, selflessness, and community.

To the committee members, volunteers, and all who played a part, thank you. Your work ensures we never forget, and that each generation continues to gather, reflect, and honour those who served.

Lest we forget.

The poppy is a powerful symbol of remembrance for ANZAC Day, representing the sacrifices made by Australian and New Zealand soldiers in times of war. Its significance originates from the First World War, particularly the battlefields of Flanders in Belgium, where bright red poppies were among the first plants to bloom amid the devastation.

Inspired by the poem In Flanders Fields by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, the poppy came to symbolize the blood shed in war and the resilience of life. In Australia, it has been embraced as a tribute to the fallen and a reminder of the cost of freedom.

On ANZAC Day, wearing or displaying a poppy is a way to honour the courage, service, and sacrifice of all who served — and to ensure their stories are not forgotten.
