A Most Important Cat

Oil painting has been teaching me patienceā€¦
which, frankly, is quite the character development.
After a few lessons with the wonderful Laurel Sloan, I was told to paint something I felt passionate about.
So, naturally, I painted the one and only boy in my life I completely adore ā€¦ Basil, my Burmese Blue.
He has absolutely no idea how much time went into this.
He was far more interested in sleeping.
Perhaps thatā€™s why he was the perfect subject.
Thank you, Laurel, for teaching me to slow down, look longer, and let the paint do its thing. šŸ¤

Home, Woven

I was really drawn to the breathtaking wired ceramic sculptures of Chiara Berta. I loved how delicate and effortless they looked, and wanted to see if I could create something using the same idea of bringing clay and wire together.
I quickly learnt that working with wire is anything but effortless. Bending it, shaping it and getting each piece to sit where I wanted it to was a challenge, but I enjoyed figuring it out as I went.
I painted each tile with little pieces of home ā€¦. the sea, lighthouses, shells and the coastline I grew up around.
Each piece is different, but they belong together.
Like memories do.

What We Carry

- Hand built ceramic plates by Charlotte Williams

I think a lot of what makes us who we are is shaped by what we carry ā€¦ expectations, ideas of beauty, vulnerability, strength and the way we see ourselves.
In these five plates, Iā€™ve combined female figures with swans and swallows to explore these ideas. The birds suggest freedom and movement, while the figures feel contained within something incredibly thin and brittle.
Thereā€™s something about that contrast that feels important to me. Something can be delicate without being weak, and fragile things can still carry a lot of strength.
Maybe the most fragile things can hold the most strength.

Hard shell, soft centre.
Built from earth, shaped by hand, and finished in fire. This little crab carries more than just claws. Itā€™s about protection. About learning when to hold on, and when to open up.
The rough textures, the layered glaze, the unexpected coloursā€¦ all the marks of becoming. Not perfect. Not polished. But real.
Sometimes we grow sideways before we move forward. Sometimes the armour is part of the beauty.
