The stair is where a timber floor gets tested.

Treads carried in the same walnut as the floor, the same brushed and oiled finish, landing on a platform that reads as part of the floor rather than a separate object sitting on it. Match the species, the grade and the finish across floor and stair and it looks like one piece of work. Get it slightly wrong and it is the first thing anyone notices.

Brushed timber and raking sun.

The surface here is spazzolato, brushed, so the soft grain is taken back and the harder grain stands slightly proud. Run low sun across it and you see texture rather than a flat sheet of colour. Oiled rather than lacquered, so the light goes into the timber instead of bouncing off it.

Oiled to a sample as well, which means the colour was approved on a full board before the floor was made. European walnut moves in colour from board to board and that is not a fault, it is the reason people specify it.

Two full seating zones, rugs, a fireplace, and the floor still reads as one field running underneath all of it. No repeating pattern of short joints breaking the plan into pieces.

Worth noting where the boards run. They cross the plan rather than follow the length of the room, which is a deliberate call and it is the one most people get wrong.

Walnut on the floor, walnut overhead, carved stone between them.

Sierra House in Kiev by and floored in Grandi Formati by in European walnut, brushed and oiled to sample. It holds its own against a double height volume, a full height glass wall and a stone feature wall with real depth in it.

That is the argument for walnut over a stained oak in a room like this. The colour is in the timber. It does not flatten out when the light changes through the day, and it does not fight the other materials for attention.

Look at how far those boards run before they stop.

Sierra House in Kiev by and laid in Grandi Formati by . European walnut, brushed and oiled to a sample colour. Grandi Formati is the large format board, wide and long, so a room this size can be crossed with very few end joints. The floor reads as one surface and the space reads longer than it measures.

That effect is decided before anything is cut. Board direction, set out, and a subfloor flat enough to carry a board that long.

The detail specifiers care about: Antico Asolo boards run 1600–2800mm long and 240/290mm wide. Long, wide planks give the grain room to resolve, and running them lengthways through a narrow room draws the eye straight to the light at the end.
