Yarn Bowl - Sheoak

Sometime ago Timbercrafts was approached to make a yarn bowl, which we did out of Camphor Laurel. We were subsequently approached to make another yarn bowl – this time to be slightly bigger and deeper and to be crafted out of Sheoak (Allocasuarina fraseriana). A yarn bowl is a specialized vessel designed to hold a ball or skein of yarn, keeping it contained while allowing it to unwind smoothly during knitting or crocheting.

Sheoak is a beautiful timber renowned for its rich hues and distinctive lacewood grain, highlighted by medullary rays giving the wood a shimmering effect. The bowl has been finished with a hard-wearing lacquer ensuring exceptionally smooth surfaces for the yarn to flow over and highlighting the natural rich colours of the wood.

Yarn Bowl

Timbercrafts was approached to make a yarn bowl. A yarn bowl is a specialized vessel designed to hold a ball or skein of yarn, keeping it contained while allowing it to unwind smoothly during knitting or crocheting.

This bowl was crafted out of Camphor Laurel (Cinnamomum camphora). This is a beautiful wood which is a real treat to turn as it releases a strong camphor scent making the workshop smell wonderful. The bowl has been finished with a hard-wearing lacquer ensuring exceptionally smooth surfaces for the yarn to flow over and highlighting the natural rich colours of the wood.

A cute mouse

In the past, Timbercrafts has been approached to make a number of interesting and unique pieces but the recent request to make multiple mice suitable for a cute addition on cheese boards was a first.
The request was for a variety of different Australian woods to be used and for the mice to have ears, eyes and tails. There was a specific request for one of the mice to have no eyes – so just ‘one blind mice’. The woods used were Jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata), Blackbutt (Eucalyptus patens), Marri (Corymbia calophylla) and Tuart (Eucalyptus gomphocephala).. We are sure that these mice will bring a smile to the users when they make their appearance on cheese boards.

Occasional Table

A client approached Timbercrafts for us to make a bespoke occasional table; as they had sourced some woody pear (Xylomelum pyriforme) and knew the design that they wanted they worked closely with Timbercrafts to ensure that their vision came to life.

Finished with Evolution Hardwax Oil; this oil is made from natural, sustainable raw materials (beeswax, carnauba wax and jojoba oil) and is non-toxic. Hardwax Oil is hard-wearing and low maintenance and enhances the natural rich colours of the woody pear.
The client was very happy with the finished product.

Bedside Tables

A client approached Timbercrafts to make bespoke Bedside Tables. They wished to have the tables crafted out of Blackbutt (Eucalyptus patens) due to the rich range of warm honey tones that combine with subtle grain patterns. The clients wanted the tables to have a Japanese style, hence the legs with a reverse taper and the tops with an undercut chamfer. We were able to source Japanese style handles made out of walnut as a contrast to the light coloured blackbutt.

Finished with Evolution Hardwax Oil, this oil is made from natural, sustainable raw materials (beeswax, carnauba wax and jojoba oil) and is non-toxic. Hardwax Oil is hard-wearing and low maintenance and enhances the natural rich colours of the Blackbutt.

The clients were very happy with the finished product.

Entry Table

A client approached Timbercrafts to make a bespoke Entry Table. The entry table needed to be made of Australian Oak (eucalyptus obliqua) and to feature the chrome used in the adjacent balustrade. [Australian Oak is a member of the Eucalyptus family, and it has a rich range of warm honey tones that combine with subtle grain patterns]. The timber uprights and top was to have a similar profile to the square chrome top used in the balustrade and the back and sides of the table needed to include some chrome uprights. I believe some nice glassware is destined to be displayed on both the shelf and the top.

Jarrah Boxes with Kumiko lids

Timbercrafts made 2 Jarrah Boxes (Eucalyptus marginata) with Kumiko lids. Kumiko is a traditional Japanese woodworking technique that involves assembling intricately cut wooden pieces to create geometric patterns without using nails or glue, often used in decorative elements like shoji screens and doors. These lids certainly added to the beauty of these boxes. The Kumiko was crafted out of Blackbutt (Eucalyptus patens) as was the inside liner.

Jigsaw Boards for Schools

Teachers always impress me.

Recently Timbercrafts was asked to provide 4 Jigsaw Boards suitable for use in a school. The School required each Board to have 4 sorting trays but more importantly needed the entire unit to be able to be packed up with the partially completed puzzle maintained and sorted pieces to remain separated in their colours, in addition, the lid needed to be able to be easily put on and removed and secured with wingnuts that young fingers can operate. Timbercrafts was pleased to be able to satisfy all these requirements and in addition provided a Lazy Susan which will allow the puzzle board to be turned to give different students the option to work on the puzzle easily.

The teacher is hoping that creating a Jigsaw Club for interested students will have a number of benefits for the students. In one study it was reported that completing Jigsaws “have other long-lasting benefits, such as helping with brain function, encouraging mindfulness and supporting early childhood development. When we’re doing jigsaws, we use both the left (‘analytical’) and right (‘creative’) sides of the brain. This strengthens connections between them, increasing our capacity to learn, understand and remember things. We’re also using our memory, as well as our problem-solving, visual perception and spatial awareness skills, to complete the picture”.

Cufflink Box

Timbercrafts was approached to make a Cufflink Box as a gift for a Christmas Gift. It was requested to have enough spaces that would conveniently store 12 pairs of cufflinks but with the compartments large enough to also accommodate a tie pin if that was part of the set.

The preference was to make the Cufflink box out of Jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata). Finished with Evolution Hardwax Oil, this oil is made from natural, sustainable raw materials (beeswax, carnauba wax and jojoba oil) and is non-toxic. Hardwax Oil is hard-wearing and low maintenance and enhances the natural rich colours of the Jarrah.
