Rise and Fall is an immersive audiovisual performance exploring the fragile balance of nature through improvisational jazz and Indian classical music. Featuring voice, violin, tabla and guitar, the project weaves Polish and Indian folk influences into a spontaneous, evolving soundscape. Live botanical visuals — created from handpicked natural elements and analogue-digital processes — bloom and transform in dialogue with the music, creating a living ecosystem of sound and image. Each performance becomes a unique meditation on loss, renewal and transformation.

This performance pays homage to the compositions of American soprano saxophone virtuoso Steve Lacy, as well as original jazz and New Music works by Johnston. Lacy’s work has been rarely performed in Australia since his untimely passing in 2004, but Johnston has been arranging and performing his work regularly since the early 80s and continues the practice here. His essay on Lacy’s tune Prospectus was included in the definitive 2021 book on Lacy’s work Steve Lacy (Unfinished).

This year we are committed to presenting more voices from international musical traditions on our stage.

This means that if your music is rooted in Indian, Anatolian, Armenian, Persian, Spanish, Chinese, Yemeni, North African, Balkan, Central Asian, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, Latin American, or other culturally grounded traditions; whether expressed in classical, folk, contemporary, diasporic, or experimental forms. We want to hear from you.

We welcome artists who honour lineage while expanding form; who carry intergenerational knowledge; who reimagine tradition through new collaborations, instrumentation, or compositional approaches; and who bring distinct cultural vocabularies into dialogue with contemporary audiences.

Soloists, ensembles, cross-cultural collaborations, and genre-defying projects are encouraged to apply.

Visit our website at Localedition.com.au or the link in our bio and fill out the form.

Muharrem Aslan - Baglama
Alister Spence - piano

Muharrem and Alister have known each other since first meeting at UNSW over a decade ago. In early 2025, they began collaborating more closely, exploring ways to bring together Anatolian bağlama music—with its evocative quarter-tone language—and jazz and free improvisation on the piano, an instrument defined by equal temperament. Over the course of the year, they composed eight original instrumental works and began to uncover a shared musical language that extends the traditions and practices of both instruments. This performance marks their debut as a duo. Deeply engaged in the creative process, they hope audiences will find the result both captivating and exciting.
