Before flushing toilets took over, some toilets literally used dirt. In the 1800s, the earth closet offered a completely different approach to sanitation. Instead of relying on a traditional water flush, some designs used dry earth that could be released into a removable container below. The idea was to help manage moisture and odor without requiring the plumbing of a conventional water closet. Pretty clever for the 1800s. But there was a catch: someone still had to refill the earth and manage the containers. Thankfully, bathroom technology has come a long way.
