Sunday Street Feed

Sunday Street Feed Sunday Street Feed is a community group helping to feed the homeless and in-need with hot, home cooked meals

Established by a group of passionate community members in North West Sydney, who had been running other similar organisations for many years, Sunday Street Feed provides hot, home-cooked meals to people in Woolloomooloo, most of whom are homeless and some who are considered vulnerable, at risk, or in need of extra assistance. Sunday Street Feed is a project and beneficiary partner of Eyes Front Li

mited, a charity registered as a Public Benevolent Institution that supports vulnerable people across Sydney in a variety of ways. Eyes Front aims to empower vulnerable populations to survive, thrive and prosper through sharing knowledge, and both peer-to-peer and targeted support. Eyes Front believes complex problems are addressed through visibility, honesty, passion, creative thinking and, the most important thing, collaboration. The organisation is dedicated to empowering each individual to survive, thrive and prosper. Together with a meal, clients receive a bag that includes both sweet and savoury snacks, a drink, a piece of fruit and other helpful items such as breakfast packs or tea/coffee packs. As the name suggests, the food is delivered on a Sunday afternoon having been prepared during the week by a band of dedicated volunteers and community members. Importantly, while the meals and other items are supplied by the community, Sunday Street Feed works in partnership with its clients in Woolloomooloo who are in charge of distributing the meals and food packs to their peers. The team at Sunday Street Feed feel strongly that the clients should be supported and enabled to play an integral role in the “feed” as partners, rather than simply as recipients. Sunday Street Feed welcomes input and donations from a variety of stakeholders within the community and its volunteers all contribute in different ways to ensure the success of every “feed”. Volunteers can play a part by supplying a meal or fresh fruit and vegetables, adding a box of snacks or drinks to their weekly shop, packing bags, sorting and stacking donated items, or being a designated driver to ensure the food arrives on time each Sunday. This grassroots movement started with a mere handful of individuals who were determined to supply a hot meal to the homeless and has now grown into a co-ordinated effort that feeds more than 80 vulnerable members of our community on a weekly basis. In addition to meals and food, Sunday Street Feed partners with other providers to supply clothing, toiletries and other helpful items as needed. As a part of Eyes Front which has DSR status, a tax deductible receipt can be supplied for any food donations over $2. Sunday Street Feed also supports Duke of Edinburgh and school volunteers to complete their community service hours. Volunteers are welcome to contribute in a number of ways but the most important part of the process is a visit to the “feed” on a Sunday. Our volunteers have the opportunity to meet and talk with clients, interact within the community, and play a role in supporting the distribution of food. Sunday Street Feed recognises that the homeless or more needy within our community are often faceless and voiceless, and regularly misrepresented by media. A visit to the feed is an opportunity for human interaction – for both clients and volunteers – and a chance to dispel many of the myths that surround homelessness. Throughout the year we also run fundraising events, to raise money for important things like ‘heat insulated containers’ and other essentials. Sunday Street Feed cannot exist without a dedicated crew of volunteers and we are always looking for more members to join our community. You don’t need to contribute every week, or every month but if you’d like to contribute something please touch base as there are many ways to play a role in this vital service.

Thank you all for your incredible support over the past 10+ years. Together we’ve changed the lives of thousands of Sydney’s homeless and vulnerable — we couldn’t have done it without you.

Sadly, I couldn’t find a new location for our hub, so this is our final week. We’re so grateful to the amazing home cooks, the super-helpful drivers, and everyone who gave time, love and care.

Goodbye and good luck to everyone we’ve met along the way — you’ve made a real difference in our community.

Our freezers are FULL — thank you! Big love to our home cooks, youth group, drivers Nishan/Mani/Caroline, and Ahmadiyya Anjuman for pantry donations.
Cooks: ingredients are on the shelves outside (eggs in the fridge).

We need a new hub location for shelves/freezers as we’re moving — can you help? DM to volunteer or offer space.

Over the past fortnight, so much good has happened and we just want to say thank you to this amazing community.

- we’ve welcomed a couple of new volunteer drivers who will be learning the ropes and working alongside the wonderful Nishan (who is, frankly, awesome).

- We’ve received at least three takeaway container donations — and yes, we still need more!

- Beecroft Rotary generously donated their leftover Australia Day food: sausages, bacon, onions, and bread.
- Vilma, one of our superstar home cooks, used this to create 20+ meals, and today I’ve been busy cooking minestrone soup and a beef sausage stroganoff to use up the rest.

On top of that, we’ve had further food donations ready to be repurposed, plus a stack of frozen meals for people doing it tough — exactly what this is all about

Thank you for showing up, pitching in, and proving that small acts of kindness really do add up.

Matt Okine visits food legend Neil Perry who creates a super quick and easy pan-fried fish; the 'Godfather' of modern Italian cuisine Stefano Manfredi makes minestrone; Alice Zaslavsky roasts vegies.

We have a small ask that makes a real difference.

We need clean, reusable takeaway containers.

Yes, we have an agreement with BioPak and could get brand new recyclable ones. But we would much rather keep the plastic already in our cupboards out of landfill and put it to good use.

If you have been quietly collecting takeaway containers, this is their moment!!!!!!!!!!

Please wash them, stack them, and drop them to 29 Surrey Street, Epping.

(No need to knock or ring the bell. Just leave them at the front door and keep the dogs calm.)

Those containers will be filled with home cooked meals and shared with people across Sydney who are homeless or doing it tough.

A simple container can become a hot meal.

That is a pretty great trade.

Huge thank you to everyone who continues to show up and support this work.

Yesterday Nishan delivered our frozen meals to St Stephens and sent through the classic before-and-after freezer photos. Before: almost empty. After: completely full. And the reality is those meals will be gone within two days, feeding people who genuinely rely on them.

This is what impact looks like.

If you have ever wondered whether a few extra meals from your kitchen make a difference, this is your answer. They absolutely do.

We would love to welcome more home cooks to our volunteer team. People who set aside a few meals each week and drop them to our Epping hub, ready for delivery. No fancy cooking required. Just good, solid food made with care.

If this sounds like something you could do, jump onto our page or sign up via lotsahelpinghands - see the link below. Even one cook, one week, makes a difference.

And if you cannot cook right now, please like, comment, or share. It helps more than you think and helps us reach the people who can.

Together, you keep that freezer full.

Today is International Volunteer Day, and we are shining a big light on the incredible local volunteer cooks and the amazing teens who give their time, energy and hearts to keep Sydney’s most vulnerable nourished with home cooked food.

From chopping and stirring to packing and delivering, this is love in action. From the very bottom of our hearts, thank you. What you do matters more than you’ll ever know.

We had another great weekend in the kitchen, this time with Abigail and her mum helping prep honey soy chicken meals for St Stephens. The feedback from their team has been amazing. They notice the variety, the care and the fact that our meals taste like home.

For people living rough or in temporary accommodation, another bulk-made soup kitchen meal can be tough. What we offer is different. Small, handmade meals from real family kitchens. Lasagne, tuna bake, schnitzel, meatballs, soups, cakes and all the “various” leftovers that get labelled, frozen and sent in when the freezer starts filling up.

If you haven’t donated in a while, this is your reminder. A couple of frozen leftovers or a bag of ingredients can make a big difference. Containers are stocked outside if you need them, lids included.

Every meal helps someone feel cared for.

Our teen volunteers were absolute powerhouses today. They didn’t just sort, wash and match containers—they rolled out full meals! Italian meatballs, chicken schnitzel, lamb roast, and all the veg to go with it. And because nothing goes to waste, the leftover bread crusts became a honey bread cake.

Thank you to everyone who has donated recently - besides containers and meals we have also had lovely ingredients donated including lots of bread!

If you’d like to help us keep this going, we’d love your support. You can donate meals or sign up to volunteer via our page through LotsaHelpingHands. Every bit of help makes a real difference.

💚 World Homeless Day & World Mental Health Day 💚

Today marks both World Homeless Day and World Mental Health Day — two causes that are deeply connected.

We want to take a moment to acknowledge our amazing volunteers from Epping, Carlingford, Beecroft and surrounding areas. With the help of our regular driver Nishan, we’re now delivering around 200 meals each fortnight to St Stephen’s Church, who include our meals in their Early Bird Café outreach program.

Each morning, St Stephen’s serves around 200 breakfasts, and they also offer frozen take-home meals to those who have access to a small fridge, freezer or microwave.

The cost-of-living crisis means that many more families are struggling than we realise — and you don’t have to be homeless to find it hard to put a decent meal on the table even once a day. We know our meals are making a genuine difference to people doing it tough.

Our volunteers — from the home cooks who save an extra serve each time they cook, to those who spend a quiet evening baking biscuits, to the teens completing their Duke of Edinburgh Award — are creating nutritious, delicious meals filled with love and care. 💛

And behind the scenes, there are the wonderful drivers and donors who keep it all moving — from bread, yoghurt, corn chips, rice, and peanut butter, to (this month’s highlight!) 10 kg of onions ready to be peeled and prepped for future meals. We always find creative ways to use every donation well. 🧅✨

Thank you all for being so thoughtful, generous, and community-minded. Together, we’re making a real difference.

If you’d like to join our team of micro-volunteers (help out whenever it suits you), just visit our page and follow the links to LotsaHelpingHands to sign up for meal prep. Every little bit helps. 💚

🌟 **Thank You to Our Incredible Volunteers!** 🌟

Our community continues to amaze us! Every fortnight we’ve been delivering the most wonderful range of meals to **St Stephen’s Church**, and it’s all thanks to our incredible volunteer team.

A huge shout-out to **Nishan**, who has been doing our deliveries with a smile for quite some time now 💛 — and to our fabulous cooks who’ve been whipping up everything from hearty mains to donated treats like **cupcakes and lemon juice**!

Special thanks to **June, Sara, Jay, Jenn**, and everyone else who’s shared food, time, and love. This weekend our **Duke of Ed teens** will be tackling a creative challenge — finding delicious ways to use up all the **bread and corn chips**! 🥖🌽✨

I’ve now loaded all the volunteer tasks right up until **Christmas** — so jump onto **LotsaHelpingHands** to sign up for a cooking or baking spot and help make a difference across our city. ❤️
