I’m delighted to be speaking at the Developer-Renovator Network Meetup in Brisbane on October 15th. Thanks to Results Mentoring for sponsoring the event. Attendance is free.

The topic is ‘Design Mistakes Cost Money: Learn How to Get It Right Before You Build’ - and why getting the design right on paper can help avoid expensive changes and mistakes once work starts on site.

If you’re renovating, developing or building, I’ll be sharing some practical ways to make better design decisions.

Thursday 15 October
Networking from 6:30pm
Presentation 7pm–9pm
Hamilton Hotel, Brisbane

Looking forward to meeting everyone there.

I haven’t posted before and afters for a while. When I was going through the photos and footage for this post, I reflected on why I create an album for every project and how I often wish I’d taken more.

I never get enough photos and footage - especially at the beginning. After doing a gazillion projects you’d think I’d have learnt by now, but I’m usually under so much time pressure to get started that taking photos is low on the priority list. Once demolition starts, the opportunity to take ‘before’ photos is gone.

I also use before and after photos as motivation when I’m taking on a new, particularly challenging project. There can be a lot of anxiety at the start, especially when you’re standing in a very run down property looking at everything that needs to be done, with a finite (usually small) budget and a short timeline.

Looking back at previous projects reminds me that they often start in a slightly scary place. Then, one decision at a time, they come together.

One of the ways to make design decisions harder is to choose finishes in isolation.

A tile might look good on its own. So might the tapware, lighting or flooring. But that doesn’t necessarily mean they will all work together.

A clear concept gives you something to test each decision against.

Instead of asking, “Do I like this?” ask “Does this support the overall idea for the project?”

That shift can make selections faster, more consistent and easier to implement.

Save this for next time you’re selecting finishes.

When I’m choosing exterior colours, these are some of the things I consider before making any selections.

- What is the main idea behind the design? What should someone notice or feel when they first see the house?
- What is the shape or form of the building? What is the architecture already doing before materials and colours are added?
- What materials already bring their own colour, texture and character?
- What features should dominate, and what should sit quietly in the background?

These are just some of the things I work through before putting together an exterior colour scheme.

Because a good facade comes from making a series of considered decisions that work together.

I’ve put together a free Exterior Design Guide with a simple framework for working through those decisions, from the initial idea through to materials and colour.

It’s been created for anyone renovating, building or developing who wants the exterior of their project to feel more considered and cohesive.

Architectural facades rarely come down to one perfect colour. They come from a series of considered decisions that work together.

Start with the idea.
Then the form and materials.
Then the colour.

When those decisions are made thoughtfully, the exterior tends to feel more cohesive. When they’re not, colour can sometimes disguise what isn’t quite working, but it usually won’t fix the underlying issue.

I’ve put together a free Exterior Design Guide to make the process a little clearer, with a practical framework to help guide your exterior design decisions.

It covers how to think through form, materials and colour, whether you’re renovating, building or developing.

Last week, I was lucky enough to go on a couple of modular home factory tours. Come along on the tour with me…
Thanks Elizabeth Gordon for organising!

This is the most overlooked number when people choose lights, especially downlights. (LED colour change lights often have a low CRI. Whereas incandescent and halogen lamps inherently have a high CRI.)

The CRI (Colour Rendering Index) measures how faithfully a light source renders the colours of an object or built environment.

The scale of measurement tops out at 100.

A CRI over 80 is the bare minimum. A CRI of 90 is my recommended minimum.

With a high CRI, colours look true and bright. With a low CRI, colours can look dull, washed out, or totally wrong - like how a phone camera with a bad filter distorts everything.

High end look for high street prices - lighting edition. Affordable lighting, used thoughtfully, can make a big impact.

1. The Calido from Beacon - perfect for coastal projects.

2. The Dykarklocka from IKEA - a bargain at $99. Looks high end - with a white stained oak veneer that suits a range of styles.

3. The Tamarind range from Beacon - linen fabric, soft and textural. Large fittings for the price. I have used these in a couple of projects and they always looked 🔥.

4. The Pebble wall light from Beacon - it’s IP44, so suitable for some exterior locations (check with your electrician). It has a cool 70s vibe going on. I’ve also used this in a project.

5. The Corbett wall light from Bunnings. Modern and sleek. Thoughtfully placed, this light will make your interiors look high end. And it’s only $32AUD! Also IP44. Also available in a brushed aluminium version.

Prices are as of 2026.

This has been a fun exercise - I might do the high-end / expensive version of this soon!

This is how I quickly found creative direction for one of my most challenging renovation projects. This project didn’t have an obvious direction so I had to step back and look at it in another way.

Beautiful interiors don’t actually require endless meetings and showroom trips. Our finishes schedules do the heavy lifting.

Design decisions sorted.
