(Update: now available in my shop) Tiny little Fairy Wren tetrapak prints… and they are still bigger than the actual bird 🐦 These little portraits will be in the shop soon ☺️

I love our little W***y Wag tails; they may be little but they will gallantly defend their territory no matter the size of the threat! I love their angry little eyebrows, and they voice their opinions very loudly 😆 You can find this print in my shop, link in bio 👆 On that note, I’ve also just launched my new website; it’s “same same but different”, just upgraded to the later version of the Squarespace platform which took a fair bit of time and rebuilding the website; glad to have it done now!

A couple of bird shots from our Easter weekend down in Berry 🐣 I spent a good chunk of time getting to know my camera and trying to catch birds in flight, which is harder than it looks (and boy is it a test in patience!). Still very much figuring things out. I was in full manual for a while, trying to get the ISO just right alongside shutter speed and watching the histogram… and then ended up getting better results just letting the camera handle the ISO and focusing on timing instead. Magpie and galah mid-air; the magpie taking off and the galah landing. Not perfect, but I was pretty happy to catch them and I do love the moody tones of the galah shot.

I just love when Australian magpies check you out, with their inquisitive little head tilts. It’s almost like this little dude decided to stick around and form an opinion 😜

Yesterday I did a half-day bird photography workshop with Glenn Smith Photography at the Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan 🌼 I’m not a photographer in the proper sense at all! I pretty much exclusively take photos of birds and wildlife for my own reference in my art practice, so I’m usually more focused on getting a useful shot than worrying too much about all the finer technical details that the camera has to offer. But cameras can do so much, and it was really good to spend some time learning more about how to get the most out of them, especially when it comes to sharp shots of birds in flight, which I’m still very much working on!

Glenn is an incredible photographer and an absolute wealth of technical knowledge, and I got a lot out of the session. All in all, a really good morning out; and we were lucky with the weather; beautiful morning and clear skies ☺️

This was a bit of a materials test. I coated this TetraPak plate with Gamblin PVA Size to see whether it might work as an alternative sealant to shellac (PVA is just wood glue). PVA size is normally used to seal porous surfaces like canvas or paper before oil painting, which reduces moisture absorption once dry. Because it’s described as water-resistant (rather than waterproof), I wanted to find out how far that water resistance would actually go under printmaking conditions; whether a week-cured coat of PVA size might survive contact with damp paper through the press without reactivating. Sadly… no. The damp paper did reactivate the PVA enough to bond itself to the plate, which you can see when I peel it back off. So for this particular use, it’s not behaving like shellac would.
Still, I’m glad I tested it. I’m always looking for ways to make my TetraPak plates last a bit longer without adding extra faff to the process (efficiency and laziness… there’s a fine 😆). If anyone has found a non-shellac sealant that works well with damp paper and pressure printing, I’d love to hear what you’ve had success with.

Same plate, different mood. I’ve been playing around with how far one TetraPak plate can be pushed. Using the same magpie, I tried two different approaches to the background; one layered over a full blue background, then I tore that background up and built up from the torn pieces to create a bleed print. I’m loving the blue ink over the folds of the TetraPak 💙
