Love a bold tablecloth but not sure how to style it? 🌿

Sometimes a beautiful patterned tablecloth can feel a little overwhelming when you’re deciding what to pair with it.

But here’s my favourite styling tip… let the tablecloth be the hero!

Today I’m using our beautiful Native Harvest tablecloth, with its stunning Australian native florals, rich colours and earthy tones.

The first thing I like to do is keep the other layers neutral.

I’ve considered both jute and braided placemats, but decided on our natural braided scalloped placemats. They add texture without competing with the beautiful pattern.

Next comes the dinnerware, and this is where it gets interesting!

I start with our Merchant white plate set. It looks lovely, especially with the matching Native napkin, but there’s something that doesn’t quite work for me.

The whites are different tones.
The white in the tablecloth has a different warmth to the white dinnerware, and sometimes those little differences can make a setting feel less cohesive.

So let’s try something else…

Our beautiful Birch dinnerware, with its warm, earthy tones and organic scalloped detail.

And what a difference! 🤍

The warmer tones complement the tablecloth beautifully, the natural textures work together, and suddenly everything feels balanced.
Most importantly, the stunning Native Harvest tablecloth remains the hero.

And that’s what styling is all about. Not everything needs to match perfectly, but the colours, textures and tones should work together.

✨ My styling tip: When working with a bold or busy pattern, keep your other layers simple and choose colours that complement rather than compete.

A beautiful coffee table is lovely… but I want mine to feel inviting too. 🌿

When I’m styling my coffee table, I usually start with a floral arrangement and these beautiful white hydrangeas and oversized green leaves certainly make a statement.

I’ve placed them in this gorgeous organic-shaped vase with its subtle green and golden detailing. The imperfect shape gives it so much character and, because the arrangement is quite full, I really don’t need to over style around it.
But apart from flowers, there are three things I almost always have on my coffee table…

🕯️ Candles to create warmth and ambience.

📖 Something interesting to read, a beautiful book or magazine that makes you want to sit down for a while.

🤍 Something to nibble on, because a little treat makes everything better!

For me, styling isn’t just about making a space look beautiful.
It’s about creating a space that makes you think…

“I’d like to sit here for a while.”
A cup of coffee, a glass of bubbles, something good to read and nowhere else you need to be. 🤍

Is your trestle table too narrow for entertaining? I have a solution. 🙌

With the warmer weather arriving, BBQ and outdoor entertaining season is here, and I love using a trestle table when we have family and friends over.

They’re practical, easy to move and easy to store…but I find they’re just not quite wide enough once you start adding plates, glasses, serving dishes and everything else that comes with entertaining.

So here’s my little entertaining hack.

I place a 2.4m × 1.2m sheet of plywood over the top of my trestle table, instantly giving me a much bigger surface to work with.
But there is one VERY important step…

Secure it.

Because we all have that one friend or relative who might lean or push down on the edge of the table 😂and the last thing we want is the plywood tipping!

I used a thin pull-down tie at either end to secure the plywood to the trestle table. Once the tablecloth goes over the top, you shouldn’t even notice they’re there.

Then you’re ready for the fun part…
Styling the table. 🌿

It’s such a simple way to create a larger entertaining table without having to go out and buy a completely new one.

And when everyone’s gone home? Take the plywood off, fold away the trestle and you’re done.

Same tablecloth. Completely different mood. 🤍🌿

Last week we brought out the beautiful greens in our Native tablecloth.

This week, we’re taking the same tablecloth in a completely different direction, soft, natural, earthy and organic.

And I have a feeling this one might be a favourite because most of us already have a white or off-white plate set at home.

I’ve started with round natural jute placemats to add warmth and texture, then layered an organic off-white dinner set with beautiful earthy speckles.

I’ve kept the matching Native napkin, but this time paired it with a white scalloped napkin ring to keep those layers soft and tonal.
Then comes my little pop of colour. 🌿
The green ripple glassware picks up the greens within the tablecloth without taking over the setting, a great example of how just one coloured element can tie an entire table together.

I’ve finished with a cream scalloped vase, beautiful white flowers and deep green foliage for a centrepiece that feels relaxed, natural and fresh.
And that’s what I love about this little Styling School series…

You don’t necessarily need more things. You just need to see what you already have differently.

One tablecloth.
The same napkin.
Two completely different tables.

One tablecloth… two completely different moods. 🌿🤎

One of my favourite things about styling is looking at the colours within a pattern and deciding which ones I want to bring forward.

Our Native tablecloth has the most beautiful palette of earthy greens, warm browns, soft peach and white, which means there are so many different directions you can take it.

For Part 1, I’m bringing out the greens. 🌿

I’ve started with our natural rectangle jute placemats with green accents, then layered our green and clay dinnerware with the matching native napkin.

Even the beautiful pearl napkin ring adds another little layer of detail.

For the centre of the table, I’ve continued the green with our vase, but rather than making everything match perfectly, I’ve added a beautiful floral arrangement with a pop of pink. 🌸

That’s one of my favourite styling tips: look for colours that complement your table rather than feeling like everything has to match.
Clear glassware finishes the setting without competing with all those beautiful colours and textures.

The result? A fresh, layered tablescape that would be just as beautiful for lunch, dinner or a special occasion.

But we’re not finished with this tablecloth…

Next week I’m taking the exact same Native tablecloth and changing the mood completely, this time with natural, earthy and organic tones. 🤎

Why do picnic tables always look like THIS?

The weather is getting warmer, spring is on its way and that means lunches, picnics and BBQs are heading outdoors again. ☀️🌿

But let’s be honest… those outdoor picnic tables aren’t always the most inviting!

My simple solution? Take the tablecloth with you.

I’ve used one of our Gingham tablecloths to completely transform this ordinary picnic table into somewhere I’d actually love to sit down, unpack the food and spend a few hours with family and friends.
And here’s a little practical styling tip…
Our Gingham tablecloths are a generous 350cm long, so if you’re using one on a shorter picnic table and have too much fabric hanging over the ends — tie it in a knot.
It keeps the excess fabric out of the way, looks relaxed and gives the table a little extra personality.
Sometimes styling isn’t about creating the perfect tablescape.
It’s simply about making wherever you’re gathering feel a little more special. 💛

Our Shared Plates journey… so far. 💚

We thought it was time to sit down, take you behind the scenes and share a little more about us, the people behind Shared Plates.

What started with a love of beautiful tables, entertaining and bringing people together has grown into something much bigger than we first imagined.

Like any small business, the journey hasn’t always been easy. There have been challenges, plenty of learning, lots of hard work and probably even more conversations between the two of us! But there has also been so much excitement, laughter and a genuine passion for what we’re creating.

Shared Plates is evolving too.

While the table will always be at the heart of where we began, our vision is growing into the wider home, helping you style beautiful, welcoming spaces in a way that feels achievable, personal and, most importantly, like you.

And we’re only just getting started. 🌿
Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more of our journey, what we’ve learnt along the way and some very exciting things happening behind the scenes at Shared Plates.
