Tonight I lit candles for every baby in our life we wish we could have held. The babies we wish we could have watched grow, and heard laugh, and tucked into bed at night.

And tonight I’m thinking of all the families who didn’t get to see their babies grow either. My heart hearts knowing there are mums and dads who walk out of hospitals every day with empty arms. Tonight I’m thinking of our babies and the ones who lost their babies before anyone even knew they were expecting. The ones who still set the table and feel the empty space. The ones carrying emptiness and this heartache quietly behind a smile because the world moved on but thwy couldn’t.

There is no timeline for this kind of grief. It doesn’t get smaller, we just slowly learn to carry it. Some days it’s heavy and some days it’s soft.

Tonight, the world glows for all of our babies. A wave of light that goes all the way around the globe so not one of them is forgotten about!

You’ve probably seen it all over the news and socials that changes around card surcharges have been a big talking point, particularly for small businesses already absorbing more and more costs.

As a small-business owner myself, I completely understand the frustration. Every little fee adds up.

The cost of products, freight, utilities, wages, rent and just about everything involved in running a business has increased. We recently had to increase our own prices to reflect those rising costs, and we know the cost of living is affecting our customers too.

So to those of you still choosing to spend your hard earned money with our little business, we really don’t want to add another cost on top of that again.

Nothing is changing at Rustic Candles & Giftware.

I’ve chosen to absorb our card processing fees rather than pass them on to you by increasing our costs. Card is absolutely still welcome with no additional surcharge from us.

But we’d also love to see more cash circulating within our local community.

When you pay a small business in cash, that cash can go straight back out the door to another local supplier, small business or service provider without another processing fee being taken along the way.

So we’ve decided to give you a little incentive to keep that cash moving locally.

One of my favourite things I’ve grown this year has to be my paper daisies 🌸

These little beauties have received SO many compliments in store, mostly from people standing there staring at them, trying to work out whether they’re real or fake 😂 I promise, they’re real… and homegrown in my backyard!

They’re also known as everlastings because of their incredible ability to hold their colour and shape once dried.

Before they finish flowering, I’ll be cutting them, bundling the stems and hanging them upside down somewhere dark, dry and well ventilated. Once completely dry, they can hold their colour and form for years, so you’ll definitely be seeing them pop up in dried arrangements around the shop.

And if you grab a fresh bunch in store, you can do exactly the same thing at home fresh flowers now, dried flowers later. Value for money, I say!

Safe to say I’ll be planting a LOT more of these cuties next year!

A little bit of a raw post today and to be honest, a little embarrassing to share.

But it’s also the very real experience of being a small-business owner in today’s economy and hopefully sharing it helps other business owners feel a little less alone.

It’s a reality I’d love to see change, because how are we in 2026 and so many Australians and small business owners feel like we’re going so far backwards?

We all know and feel household budgets are tight because ours is too. Bills keep rising, interest rates are high and by the sounds of things about to get higher and diesel has just hit $3 in parts of the ACT.

My husband and I also own and operate separate small businesses, we get it! So this certainly isn’t intended to pressure anyone into spending money they don’t have.

It’s really just a conscious reminder that small businesses are still here and working incredibly hard to create and keep local jobs, support other businesses and contribute something valuable and unique to our communities.

As many of you know, we reduced our trading hours right back over winter as fewer people were coming through our doors. We assumed the cold Canberra weather played a part, but ultimately, the cost of opening wasn’t making sense for us the first half of the week.

Now that the warmer weather is arriving, we’re reviewing our spring and summer hours and we would really value the input of our Rustic and Murrumbateman community.

When would you actually have time to visit? Particular weekdays or times? After 4pm? Weekends? Occasional late-night shopping?
