Torbay Pottery

Torbay Pottery We create functional and beautiful pottery pieces in Albany Western Australia. Your unique item can be made to order becoming part of your home.

Wonky Pot Pottery, Torbay Western Australia, was named by our son using the ‘wonky pot’ on the bench. This was a wheel thrown then altered large open bowl that was waiting to go out to the Oranje Tractor Winery for display and sale. After much laughter the name stuck! Pottery was something I had always dreamed of doing. A cancer journey meant early retirement and a change in direction with my lif

e. I found peace and a sense of achievement when working with clay. David was soon caught in the spell of working with clay too, to take wet earth and create an object of simple elegant form that is functional but beautiful too. For now our passion is for wheel thrown pieces of functional ware. To be used and enjoyed. We regularly make items such as bowls of every size, jugs and pouring batter bowls, platters, mugs and accessories. A new item that races out the door as fast as they are made are Yarn or Knitting bowls, your ball of wool sits inside and the thread runs out through either a hole or a slot. I have worked with many of our new friends to create colourful and individual designs that were given as special and unique gifts. We welcome custom design enquiries across our range. Bendigo Bank Great Southern Art Trail 2013 was our first exhibition with our pottery followed by 2014, held at the Oranje Tractor Winery in their newly expanded Cellar Door and Café area. David demonstrated on the wheel most days, (which was amazingly helpful for new stock for the markets) and I demonstrated decorating and design styles. Pam and Murray have the best coffee and food, in the loveliest Organic Gardens around! Our page will help you keep up with the latest happenings and which markets we will next be travelling to. In the development of our business we will be looking to expand into online markets and eventually a webpage of our own. But our core focus will remain the challenge and satisfaction of making quality pottery, continually learning and experimenting. We love that our pottery becomes part of peoples homes and lives, the joy of knowing that our work has been chosen with care as a gift for someone they love or a piece they have bought for themselves. It is why presenting our pottery at Markets is an important part of the process, in development of styles and designs, and getting to know who our customers are and what will suit their needs the best.

Why am I showing you a Custom Jug from Christmas? When I make customs, I make extra just in case. Lol I had forgotten that I had never completed the second one and I discovered a damp box with it and bits and pieces in it. The handle is a bit too dry though, so tonight I will pull another handle, and try not to forget to put it on when I have dried it to the same moisture levels. Have a lovely day!

The rest of the kiln is still to be unloaded, but I pinched my new mug out, because I couldn’t wait. What do you think?

Sharing my new Spring time Mug prototype. I wanted to show you the final look of the dragonflies before it went into the glaze bucket. I am so excited to see how the colours pop with a nice glossy clear glaze. There are some very vibrant coloured dragonflies around the world, the ones I see here in Torbay, in the Great Southern of Western Australia, are darker, with some yellow greens. So these are a nod to them and their air battle play over the water. The kiln is doing its thing today and I will get eyes on everything, students and some custom orders too, Friday morning.

Decided to do one of the Springtime Mugs for myself. A little message to myself while I am trying to rest and kick this sneaky little bug that kept me out of the home studio even yesterday! I did manage to do flowers on the mugs (today I will be rubbing them back a little to clean up the lines, if I make it to the shed) last night, but couldn’t decide on the colours to use on the dragonflies. Tones of dark blue/black/greens maybe? Thoughts?
Needless to say, Studio 3 in town will remain closed today so I don’t share anything more than the love of pottery! :D

When you are glazing late at night and you have that feeling of being watched!

I’m a bit under the weather at the moment, so Studio 3 closed today and tomorrow to work at home and stay warm. Stay warm and dry folks, it feels like winter just arrived. 🥶😀

I was relieved to find that these little hardenbergia urns had come safely through the bisque firing. Hopefully the glazing will be finished over the next couple of days so I can get the kiln kicked away on the weekend. I have enough bisque ware on the trolley to either just keep glazing and be ready to back load another glaze kiln, or use the cooking time to attempt to refill my shelves with mugs, butter keepers and yarn bowls. There’s just a few more custom requests to finish and then I can maybe claim to be up to date? It’s always important to have goals in life!! lol

This is a sweet little sugar bowl and smaller butter keeper. Perfect for when you have visitors over for morning tea. Or you just don’t need a big serving of butter on your bench. :D Available today with all stock being 10% off for Mothers Day.
