Trying out some new ideas here! I’m totally enjoying this process of assembling small individual ceramic pieces within a frame. The background is mulberry paper which I love using due to its pliability, earthiness and texture. Making each piece is rewarding in itself with surprising forms emerging the more experimental my approach. As always my inspiration is drawn from memory, the natural world, from seashells, coral and everything from seaweed to sea sponges that I find washed up on the sand.

I’ve been totally absorbed by clay and haven’t painted for some time. This painting done recently is one that I’m really happy with. Often approaching art in a different way produces unexpected and inspiring results and a greater spontaneity. I ditched my brushes here and used mainly a palette knife. It’s been up on the wall for months and is still drawing me in. I think that’s a good gauge for me! It remains untitled. Acrylic and ink on canvas, 100cm square format.

Today I uncovered this old painting tucked away safely in a cupboard (a copy of Frederick McCubbin’s “Down on His Luck”). I painted this probably 30 years ago 😳when I was learning a lot from copying the old masters. I remember it took me a long time (with a steady hand, infinite patience and perfect eyesight) - all of which have abandoned me! 🤣🤣Gotta say it made me happy to find it and it’s off to the framer tomorrow.

Thanks to the enthusiastic pottery lover who became the new owner of this quirky textured pot at our Wollongong Makers Market stall.
It feels so meaningful for someone to love something you’ve made by hand as much as you enjoyed creating it! This piece was made using Keane Warm 33.

I was thrilled this small organic sculpture found a new owner at Wollongong Makers Market on the weekend. From a massive downpour for the first few hours that almost washed us all out it turned into such a fun and very successful event for our shop. It was an absolute pleasure (and such a hoot) 🤣 working beside these legends!

When I decided to make platters from some clay slabs I had rolled I had no idea how they would turn out. However, the clay guided me (as it tends to do) in a “wavy” direction. These wave platters were the result. I’m happy with this theme and intend to explore it further. For now the platters await glaze firing. 🤞😊

I learnt a lot from making this layered clay pot which was the first out of the four I made (the third was an unsalvageable disaster)! 🫤🤣 The highly textured aspect of course is my thing however, the decorative features and patterning are a definite departure from my natural style! Having said that I really enjoyed making it - delving into a new technique I will explore further. I truly believe that trying something new is nourishing for the soul and in this case it certainly was that! The clay I used was Keane Mid Fire 33 Warm. 🥰

For the past few weeks I’ve been busy creating with for the upcoming this coming weekend. This piece is a hand-built ceramic wall sculpture (or free-standing ceramic sculpture). It’s been finished with Mayco Black Engobe which fires to a beautiful matte look and feel. It’s the first time I’ve used this product and will definitely use it again.

I’m so excited to have a another piece ready for Wollongong Makers Market! As part of our space will be displaying an abundance of unique and beautiful, quality ceramic items (both wheel thrown and hand-built) by our incredibly talented members (🎄great gift ideas for Christmas). Makers Market will be held at Wollongong’s Innovation Campus on 9th - 10th November.
