More than a café… this was an exercise in translating place into materiality, atmosphere and experience.
People often ask where a design begins. At 2Shae Creative, it rarely starts with a floor plan or finishes schedule. It begins by asking how a space should feel, how people might move through it, and how it can genuinely belong to the place in which it sits.
For the café within the Maclean Medical Centre, the ambition was never simply to create somewhere to buy coffee.
It was to design a hospitality space deeply connected to Maclean on Yaegl Country, the mighty Clarence River ‘Biirrinba’ and supportive of the people who will occupy it every day.
Inspired by clay-rich soils, native wildflowers, afternoon light dancing across the Clarence, sugar cane turning gold, coastal cliffs, heritage brick, weathered roofs and naturally aged surfaces, the palette became an exercise in translating place into materiality.
Warm mineral finishes, blush clays, coffee and cacao hues, muted rusts, natural timbers and tactile surfaces were layered to feel calm, textural and inviting.
Handmade zellige tiles, upholstered forms, softened edges, curved lighting and subtle arch references introduce warmth and familiarity, whilst rhythm, repetition and tonal layering establish visual calm.
There are quiet nods to nostalgic hospitality, reinterpreted through a contemporary coastal lens.
Whilst situated within the Medical Centre, the café was always intended to belong to the wider community; a place for practitioners and staff to recharge, patients and loved ones to find comfort, and equally for locals, visitors, remote workers and friends to reconnect, linger over lunch and simply enjoy being there.
Ultimately, I wanted the café to feel like a gentle exhale. A warm hug in built form.
Familiar, comforting and quietly uplifting. Grounded yet refined, nostalgic in moments, contemporary in ex*****on and enduring in its appeal.
Although the intended tables havent arrived for the grand opening unfortunately, the new and even better ones will be added early July and elevate the space even more.
I’m grateful for the trust given to me by developer Andrew Tom, and architect AJM Architectural Designs for this project, and I couldn’t imagine a better fit than Bowen’s Cafe, who have taken on the space, to bring it to life exactly as it was imagined. As a Yamba resident I am thrilled my fave Bowens coconut cappuccino is now also avaialbale in Maclean.
After months of drawings, palettes and visualisations, I can’t wait to watch it fill with coffee, familiar faces, slow conversations, remote workers tapping away on laptops, friends reconnecting and a community embracing it exactly as intended.
