🌸 Timeless Elegance – The Jamdani Saree 🌸
Step into tradition with the beauty of handwoven Jamdani sarees, a masterpiece of Bengali heritage. Made with love, skill, and patience, each Jamdani tells a story of craftsmanship that goes back over 2,000 years flourishing particularly during the Mughal era (16th–18th centuries)
✨ Origin & Heritage:
• The term “Jamdani” is derived from Persian:
o “Jam” meaning flower
o “Dani” meaning vase
– symbolizing the floral motifs woven into the fabric.
• Dhaka (now in Bangladesh) was the historical center of Jamdani weaving. The fabric gained international fame under the Mughal emperors, especially during the reign of Emperor Akbar.
• It was known as “Muslin of Bengal” or “Dhakai Jamdani,” cherished for being feather-light and extremely delicate.
• In 2013, UNESCO declared Jamdani as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, recognizing its deep cultural significance.
🧶 Materials Used in Jamdani Sarees
Jamdani weaving is known for its labor-intensive, artistic process. Each saree takes weeks or even months to complete.
🔹 Base Fabric:
• Cotton: Traditionally, Jamdani sarees are made from fine cotton (Muslin), known for its softness and breathability.
• Silk-Cotton Blend: Modern Jamdani sarees may also include silk threads blended with cotton for extra sheen and durability.
🔹 Motif Threads:
• Mercerized Cotton or Silk Threads: Used for weaving intricate motifs like flowers, paisleys, geometric shapes, and peacocks.
• The motifs are woven by hand, not printed or embroidered, making each piece truly unique.
Loom Type:
• Woven on a pit loom, the designs are inserted manually using a discontinuous weft technique — a hallmark of Jamdani craftsmanship.
