We’re proud to present the inspiration behind this project taking shape in West Hillhurst, in collaboration with HeavenView Homes

Raw, quarried stone, warm vertical oak, and darkened metals come together in a material-led home you feel through its surfaces first.

We’re excited to document the process from the ground up.

One bold room > One bold accent wall

We could’ve stopped at one wall. Something moody behind the bed and call it a statement.

But the ceiling’s the fifth wall, and skipping it always shows. So we took the green all the way up and let the whole room go deep and dark. The wood floor keeps it warm instead of heavy, and the sheers pull some of the light back in so the contrast doesn’t feel severe.

An accent wall gives you one good moment. A room that fully commits gives you somewhere you don’t want to leave.

Calgary’s design community showed up last night kicking off design week, and it was something to see.

There’s a version of this city that people don’t always talk about. The makers, the studios, the people quietly building a design culture here that can hold its own anywhere. Design week is when we get to be in a room together and feel the weight of that.

Proud to build here. Proud of the people doing it alongside us.

I notice buildings the way some people notice music. These are the hotels I think about when I should be thinking about something else, and the architects behind
them.

Amangiri.
Architecture by Marwan Al-Sayed, Wendell Burnette and Rick Joy. They poured it in concrete the color of the Utah desert, then set it so quietly against the rock you lose
the seam between land and building. That restraint takes nerve.

7132, Vals.
Architecture by Peter Zumthor. His quartzite baths are the closest architecture comes to a religious experience. Stone, water, a silence you can almost hear.

Shebara.
Architecture by Killa Design. They floated mirrored steel pods over the Red Sea until the water and sky swallow them whole. It should read like a spaceship. It reads
as inevitable.

Aman Tokyo.
Architecture by Kerry Hill. He carried washi, dark stone and the calm of a ryokan 30 floors above one of the loudest cities on earth. That hush is the whole point.

Marqués de Riscal.
Architecture by Frank Gehry. He threw titanium ribbons of pink and gold over an 1858 winery and left the argument between old and new gloriously unresolved.

None of these buildings fight where they stand. That’s the trick, and almost nobody gets it right.

I tell clients the same thing every time. Spend on what you touch, what you use daily, and what you can’t easily swap later.

The pieces that earn it: a rug with real weight and a proper hand, because it anchors the whole room and you feel the quality underfoot every day. Bedding you actually want to get into. Solid brass hardware, because it wears in rather than out. One original artwork instead of three prints, because a single considered piece does more than a wall of filler. A coffee maker that looks as good as it performs, since it lives on the counter regardless.

None of this is about spending more. It’s about spending in the right places, and letting the rest stay quiet.

I tell clients the same thing every time. Spend on what you touch, what you use daily, and what you can’t easily swap later.

Solid brass hardware, because it wears in rather than out. One original artwork instead of three prints, because a single considered piece does more than a wall of filler. A coffee maker that looks as good as it performs, since it lives on the counter regardless. And a few sculptural objects, the Georg Jensen kind, that hold up close and from across the room.

None of this is about spending more. It’s about spending in the right places, and letting the rest stay quiet.

There are phrases that never make it into our vocabulary.

Not because we’re precious about it, but because each one represents a shortcut, and shortcuts are where good design falls apart.

The details are the work. The planning is the work. The restraint to stop before something becomes too much, that’s the work too.

What you’ll never hear from us is a compromise dressed up as a decision. Everything we do at Studio Tano is deliberate, or it doesn’t make the cut.

Two influences, one house: the ease of an East Coast cottage, the clarity of mid-century design.

The Tide House is a complete renovation of a Calgary home’s main and upper floors: terrazzo, white oak, walnut, and a kitchen in a blue that shifts with the light.
We preserved the original character and rethought everything around it.

The full project is now live on our website.

Meet Denya. Newest to the studio. Already very much one of us.

Some fun facts about her:

Her camera roll is 90% architecture. Some people photograph their lunch. Denya photographs a stairwell she liked.

She throws pottery on the weekends. She calls it therapeutic, which explains a lot about how calm she is.

She hasn’t taken off the necklace her grandparents gave her. Not once.

Chai latte in hand, R&B playing, AirPods never far. The studio soundtrack, essentially.

Turns out someone who makes things with her hands and notices the details everyone walks past is exactly who you want on a design team.

Welcome, Denya. 🤍
