Look at the top half of that glass.

That is roughly twenty feet up, and there is no cord, no chain and no wand anywhere on the wall. That is not a styling decision for the photo. It is the only way a shade that size gets used more than once.

Tall windows are the reason motorization exists. They are the best thing about a room like this and the hardest thing to live with, because the light that makes the space is the same light that heats the sofa and washes out the television every afternoon. A ladder solves it once. Nobody solves it twice.

Here the sheers do the softening at eye level and the roller handles the upper storey on its own. Two layers, two jobs, one wall.

If your ceiling is taller than your reach, that is the conversation to have early.

Late August light is the most flattering light of the year in Alberta, and it is also the hardest to live with. Low, long, straight through the west windows at dinner.

Sheer layers keep the glow. Drapery gives the room weight. Motorization means the house adjusts before you do.

A room that handles its own light feels finished in a way furniture never quite delivers.

If your home has been almost right for a while, this is the season to fix it properly.

Everyone dresses the living room. Almost nobody touches the wall you walk past forty times a day.

Two-storey stairwell glass is the hardest surface in a house. It is too tall to reach, too exposed to leave bare, and every off-the-shelf option looks wrong on it. So most homeowners just live with the glare on the stair treads and the fishbowl feeling at night.

Here we ran full-height sheer drapery across the entire run, entry door wall through to the top of the stairwell. The light stays. The exposure goes. The whole hall reads as one calm surface instead of a patchwork of windows.

Your entry is the first thing you see coming home and the first thing a guest sees at the door. It deserves the same attention as the room you photograph.

We don't start with the blinds. We start with the room.

Look at slide two. That is the great room in this house with the shade all the way down, and you can still see the field and the horizon line through it. Nothing about that room wanted to be dark. It was built around a view.

Now look at slide four. Same house. Same wall of prairie. Same motorized system. Shade all the way down and the window is simply gone.

That is not a different product doing a different job. That is the same question asked in two rooms and getting two honest answers. A great room that exists for the view keeps the view. A bedroom does not need one. Neither does the media room on slide five.

You bought blackout blinds. So why is there still light on the ceiling at 6am?

Here is what most people are never told. Blackout describes the fabric, not the room. A true blackout fabric blocks light passing through it. Room darkening filters it down to a soft glow. Both are correct choices. They are just answers to different questions.

The part that decides everything is the edges. Light does not usually come through the fabric. It comes around it. Mount depth, side channels, headrail choice and cassette detailing are what turn a blackout fabric into an actually dark room.

That is the difference between a blind and a properly specified window covering.

Sheers are the most underrated thing you can put on a window.

Look at the floor in this room. The sun is coming straight at the glass, and instead of a hard white block of glare across the table, it arrives soft and spread out. The room stays bright. Nobody has to get up and move.

This showhome runs the same fabric on two window walls in the dining room, then again on the wall of glass in the primary bedroom. Floor to ceiling, wall to wall, so the track reads as part of the architecture instead of something hung over a window.

That is the whole idea. You are not blocking the light. You are changing its texture.

This is a window.

Ten minutes before this photo, the same wall was twelve feet of sliding glass looking out over open prairie. Now there is no window edge anywhere in the frame.

The reason it disappears is not the fabric. It is the track. It runs well past the opening on both sides, so when the drapery is open it stacks onto the wall instead of onto the glass, and the view comes back whole. Most drapery quietly keeps eight or ten inches of the window forever. This one gives all of it back.

There is a shade on the glass as well, so the room has a middle setting, not just open or shut.

Three states. One opening. The room reads finished in all of them.

Nine rooms in one Calgary home. Every window handled with the same logic and not one of them treated the same way.

The living room got sheers on a full-width track, so the doors can disappear or the whole wall can soften. The primary got a shade behind drapery, two layers on one opening. The guest room got the colour on the fabric so the walls could stay quiet. The kitchen got a single roman shade cut to the opening, because one was enough.
