Little Owl Makes

Little Owl Makes I'm Shannon, a late-diagnosed ADHD woman in BC, Canada, and I make things. This is Little Owl Makes.

I knit, draw, paint, make crafts, and have just enough "Hmm, I could make that" mentality to get myself into more projects than I can count.

Sneak peek of a new project I’m working on. This little bumblebee and the flowers it’s visiting will be added as the featured panel on a tote bag soon, made predominantly from thrifted and recycled fabrics. When it is finished, it will be available for sale. Keep an eye out for it over the next few days! ♻️

Spent some time at the sewing machine this weekend — turning UFO’s into FO’s and doing some stash planning & organizing. A fun weekend that ended with making a little cat toy with as a mini introduction to sewing for Human 1!

A special request from my nephew: a pink kitty cat! This is from a pattern book called Victorian Cats to Knit and the pattern is called The Parlor Cat. A fun little loaf cat and a satisfying quick knit. This was made with scrap yarns blended together to create a marled effect and the result is darn near perfect if I do say so myself! Pink Kitty even passes inspection with the live kitties for permission to join the snuggle puddles (see last photo).

When your kittens had their spay and neuter done and they hate the plastic cones and borrowed cat onesies you found, you take matters into your own hands and sewing machine and you make some soft cones and a better fitting onesie! I could have sworn I had some Velcro in the house but I can’t seem to find it when I want to use it… classic. So, these little soft cones have button closures and the extra material from making these ones will be used to make some to donate to local kitties in need!

I started this rug shortly after moving to BC in January of 2024. While it’s spent most of the time since I started it as a project on hold, I really want to finish this moss rug so that I can enjoy it! It’s made using a combination of techniques like latchhooking to tie on tufts, and more traditional rughooking where I use a crochet hook and a continuous thread to pull loops up through the burlap to create a super plush and loopy rug. A lot of the yarn in this project is scrap yarn from other things, so this is a fun way that I reduce my waste and make my supply last longer! What I can’t decide at this point is if I should keep going until both pieces of burlap are combined into one rug, or if I should separate the two and have two smaller moss rugs… given how heavy this is getting as I work on it, I’m almost leaning towards having two.

A few days ago I shared a photo of my workspace. It was cluttered and sitting at it felt claustrophobic and hard to create at.

I’ve taken some time to reorganize (and do some minor cosmetic adjustments!) and now this desk feels like somewhere I want to be, somewhere I can sit and let my thoughts percolate and come out of whatever writing or drawing implements I have on hand.

It’s not perfect, but often times perfectionism gets in my way and I put off doing something at all because I know I can’t do it perfectly. I’m trying consciously remember and live the aphorism “perfect is the enemy of good”, knowing that creating something at all is the first step towards creating something special.

This is a “behind the scenes” moment.

This little desk is the home base for most of the things I make that aren’t fibre arts. It’s small, it’s cluttered, but it exists. Today, I feel like it’s important to acknowledge that part of the process of making art is making SPACE to make that art, both mentally and physically. Throughout this week I will be spending some time cataloging and organizing all of my creative supplies and ideas, and finding ways to make this little space more functional.

Take care Owlets, see you next time!
