What is Animism?
Animism is the belief that the natural world is alive with spirit or personhood. Rather than seeing nature as a collection of objects or resources, animists understand trees, rivers, mountains, animals and even particular places as beings with their own presence, worthy of respect.
Unlike pantheism, which sees the divine as present throughout the universe as a whole, animism focuses on the individuality of the world around us. An ancient oak, a flowing river or a weathered hill is not simply part of nature, it may be regarded as having its own spirit, awareness or identity.
Animism is one of humanity's oldest ways of understanding the world and has appeared in many cultures across the globe. Today, many pagans incorporate animistic ideas into their spiritual practice, approaching the land with reverence, making offerings, acknowledging land spirits, or simply cultivating a respectful relationship with the places they visit.
Animism is not a single religion, nor does it prescribe one set of beliefs. For some, it means believing that spirits inhabit the landscape. For others, it is a way of recognising that humans are part of a wider community of living beings rather than separate from it.
At its heart, animism invites us to see the world not as something to be owned or controlled, but as something to be respected, listened to and lived alongside.
