This daughter knew exactly how to help her mom start the process of downsizing.

๐Ÿ’ƒ

As someone who downsized my own family (David, me, Sky) from 3,800 sq. ft. to 1,500 sq. ft., I know how big of a transition this can be. And the way to do it is NOT to burst into your momโ€™s home of 20 years and tell her itโ€™s time to get rid of everything.

Instead, she hired me. ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

Her momโ€™s house is for sale, but after a few showings and no real movement, the goal was to change up the vibe. We cleared the craft room, packed away some knickknacks and started making the home feel lighter for showings.

The first session, Mom stayed by my side while I worked. By the second, she trusted me, was joking around and was so much more open to the process. We slowed down when we needed to, especially with sentimental pieces, and there was never any pressure.

๐Ÿถโค๏ธ

She isnโ€™t completely packed up yet, but now she knows what the process looks like and when that SOLD sign goes up, she already has someone she knows and trusts to help with the next step if she wants.

I absolutely loved winning this lady over and spending time with her daughters. Now letโ€™s get this house SOLD!

I donโ€™t know why, but this story makes me laugh.

๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ’ƒ

So there we were, tackling her storage room, which was filled with stuff. At the beginning of the session she said to me, โ€œAll I want left in here by the end are my suitcases and that grow tower I plan on putting outside one day.โ€

So we got to work! ๐Ÿ’ซ

We decluttered, made a ton of decisions, and before long we were standing there looking at a bunch of completely empty shelving.

Thatโ€™s when she turned to me and said, โ€œYou know what? Letโ€™s get rid of the shelving too. Iโ€™ll sell it.โ€

Music to my ears ๐Ÿ˜‚

And that brings up a really good point. If we kept all those empty shelves in there, they would eventually become a place for things to migrate back to and get stashed again.

Sheโ€™s at a phase in her life where the kids are grown, sheโ€™s travelling monthly like a celebrity, and she genuinely doesnโ€™t want anything creeping back into this room.

๐ŸŽ‰

So why keep the surfaces that make it easy to start collecting things again?

I love when a client gets exactly what they wanted from a space. What started as a hidden drop zone is now just a fresh, open room with her suitcases, her grow tower and absolutely no invitation for clutter to come back.
